Use 'X' button to really exit Steam
Hi
Is there a way to make it so the 'X' in the top right of the Steam screen actually completely exits Steam (instead of minimizing & hiding it), like 99% of all the other software in the world? Thanks.

Many different programs only use X to minimize to the tray rather than close the app when they tend to do things in the background and are desired to do so.

Right click the icon and hit "Exit Steam" as it has been for decades, like many other programs out there.

actually it's the opposite, the majority of applications minimize to tray on clicking x to prevent accidental shutdown by users

Steam runs as a service hence why X does not exit and shutdown Steam.

To exit Steam and shut it down.

Menu > Steam > Exit.

or:

Right click tray icon > Exit.

No way, sadly.

Um no they don't. The majority of YOUR applications =/= the majority of applications. It only makes sense for programs which are supposed to run in the background. Which Steam actually is not one of.

Or if you're in a hurry make a macro with:

steam://exit

that really would be inconveniant and cause people to constantly restart steam.

While I'm asking if anyone got a source to cite, I'd be surprised if one that goes into the statistics of this detail exists.

For as far back as I know, applications on Windows that primarily are in "windowed" form had the option to prompt you with a "Do you really want to exit? Yes? No?" message box when you hit the 'X'. This is most often the case for me, even now, when I have an unsaved document. That said...

...Steam is a great deal background process. As far as I can tell, the client window is probably just a glorified web browser. While I do not know too much about what the background processes do, I imagine some of them may help with Steam's integration with the software it launches (Steam's gamepad settings, Steam overlay, maybe even telemetry with Steam servers).

same problem for me. I really don't understand the stupid idea by minimising with X instead of closing it!
The _ button is close to the cross to minimise it. So why the hell the X do the same?
I hate programs running by its own in background and if i choose to CLOSE it, then it must CLOSE and not continue running.
The stupid answer by people saying "it prevent to accidentaly close it" WTF??? Just add a popup "are you sure" and its done.

I know why it goes to system stay, its just to keep this app open to see it at all time and improve sells. It's only a marketing choice.
Blizzard + Epic launcher has an option in settings to chose how the X works... but not steam.

Some people don't seem to understand that X and _ are not the same? X closes the window while _ minimizes it to the tool bar. To close the program, you have to do it manually. Steam is a needed process to run your games. 2 clicks will not kill you.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
