What would happen if …
Ok so I was searching for something new to play. I see some games on sale but there the “you call that a sale” sale types on some. Anyway so then as I kept searching for something I thought about this. What would happen if steam decided one day they want to go a different route ? Say they stop doing the game thing and try something different. What would happen to our games ? Would servers be shut down ? Cause we all know it cost money to keep those online. Would we be refunded somehow for the money that was put into the games at the time ? Nothing is forever. So yeah I was just thinking about all this stuff like that. Has anyone else have similar thoughts ? I’m starting to see some steam decks at retro stores now. Do they know something I don’t ? Or perhaps just sold to get the new deck ? The sky is the limit with these thoughts. And even with other game company’s. What would happen to those ? This is why I prefer physical game copy’s over digital downloads. But that’s me and there are some cool downloads. I like both. What would happen though ? And what would you do ?.
No more servers. No more support. - obvious you’d have to find something else. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Never thought about this until I saw your post? What would happen if steam shutdown> all these games need steam to run right? I doubt steam or VALVE would reimburse 100,000+ people I dont collect Phyiscal Media now as new PCs dont have CD ROM drives, I just got a brand new PC and no CD ROM DRIVE so it would be useless. Id have go buy a external CD ROM Drive

If for whatever reason Steam stopped existing, legally, Valve don't need to do a thing. Even the SSA we all agree to, states as much. There will be no refunds. Valve might optionally remove the Steamworks DRM from titles that have it, but they won't do anything for any title using any other form of DRM.

It doesn't matter where you purchase software, no license guarantees you access for perpetuity.

Also, for OP, even physical copies aren't safe from this, especially today. If there's no way to connect online for patching or to any developer/publisher provided server required for play, etc., those games can be rendered unplayable, too.

I wonder if we could still play offline if Steam shutdown?
