Does having three of a kind of cards mean anything?

No, unless you are trying to complete the set for the game, in which case you got hosed by the RNG and have to sell two of the cards and buy the ones you are missing.

Even then, there is 5 levels per badge, anything at or below 5 of the same card is fine.

That is true as well. I don't do badges, so I forgot about the levels.
