Just watch vids and judge for yourself, and end these pre orders. That's just stupid in this day and age.
If I don't like or enjoy a game, I won't recommend it so it will get a negative review. Simple.
It's an opinion, and negative opinions about a game (as long as they are given in a civil manner) are just a valid as a positive opinion of a game. I have found some games I really enjoyed that had middling review scores, too, and I have had games with "Overwhelmingly Positive" reviews that I did not enjoy- maybe it was the story, or lack of accessibility, or clunky controls, or poor optimization, or whatever. If so- I am going to say so. I cannot and will not recommend a game I did not enjoy.
If people were only allowed to leave positive reviews- even the worst games Steam sells would have resoundingly positive scores- so people would be buying crap thinking they were buying something great. That would be even more confusing, don't you think? Or do you really expect every single gamer to love every single game every made? Life would be rather boring if we weren't allowed to like different things.
Though there's also the question whether the game we're reviewing is for us or not to begin with. If a person is not the intended audience, no amount of detailed feedback and politeness would ever make a difference. If someone goes complaining about the progression wipe in a roguelike or the difficulty in a souls-like game, those complaints will fall onto deaf ears.
In the end, the best kind of review one could write is the kind of review they themselves would want to read.
valve just wants to boost numbers
If I ask you "would you recommend that I play this game", any answer that is not "yes" is "no".
Absolutely. When people consider a game just average, they tend to give it a positive review. After all, it wouldn't be fair to give a negative review to a game that you don't consider bad.
Both answers are useless, because they don't indicate how good (or bad) a game is. And that's what people want to know when looking at game ratings.
“Ninety percent of those who respond would recommend this” is of no use to you?
Of little use at best. You surely understand the difference between a Corolla and a Rolls Royce, right? I can recommend you both cars, and yet there's a huge difference between them. Same to any product, including games.
So they are literally using the review the way they are supposed to, by saying why THEY didn't like it? Shocker.
