Couldn't have said it better. They really think they got one over on someone by *checks notes* giving them free points...
Not really a reason to farm points.
Some users think having a ton of awards makes them look cool regardless of the award.

Another reason is people could be holding out hope Steam brings back gold profiles. A very expensive item you could buy when points were new. It made your profile gold themed, but more importantly you had a completely different name colour over the other peasants using the Steam forum.
Obviously some people just do it because they want to see a number of a fake currency go up too. But I'm just talking about the practical reasons for why that fake number can even hold any value at all.
edit: I see you can only buy up to 40 of this season's badge. So more like 25$ per season and 50$ per year if there are only 2 seasonal badges per year. Point still stands.

I agree points are pretty useless once you change your profile to how you want it. Troll threads have always existed, even before awards were a thing, it might encourage such behavior but if moderators do their jobs, such people rarely stick around.
