How good does anti cheats work on Steam?

I was at once more geared towards PC gaming. Then I found out that everyone is using cheats.
So I switched to console. The new consoles are now going for around $900 which I can not afford, but new games are coming out where you need a new console or a PC to play. Im thinking of switching to PC gaming. Now that time has gone by, I was wondering how well the anti cheat system is on Steam? Because if its good, thats incentive to play off Steam instead of the games directly or 3rd party servers. Do people go around blatantly cheating? Or is it something a few do, some get caught. Do a few do it and most get caught? Or is it almost impossible to find a cheat that works on Steam?

Valve/steam only uses VAc but only on these applied games:

But other games its up to the developers on what they use for anti-cheats.
Sadly there isnt a 100% secure cheat.

Its up to the devs how they use a anti cheat, vac (the steam/valve anti cheat) is one of the besta anti cheats on the market as it avoid false bans as much as possible, other anti cheata tend to do more false bans especially battlee eye where even open source code on github triggers a ban on all games that use it even if you dont have the game installed after you use the code and the code just change hardware ids.

So it depends on the game.

Strictly game by game, but every game will have cheaters, its never possible to stop them, just deter and try to minimize it

It is a lot easier to get cheats on PC than it is on a console. So I'm not sure how that compares, even with a great anti-cheat in place, you will see cheaters there are a lot of people trying at it, even if briefly before the anti-cheat concludes they need to be taken off.

Think of the games you want to play and check those specifically, read their discussions see how many are about cheaters.

Yea. I can see that it being a thing you have to just keep on your toes about.
On console cheats only happen on cross platform games, and many games on both PC and console make sure to not cross platform the games. Because generally console games do not accept the transfers of client side data so its impossible on most games.
