2024 a weak year for new games?
Is it just me, or does this year seems to unusually weak when it comes to new good games? Looking over the list of announced games so far on my wishlist, there seem to be a lot fewer releases than normal (I typically play around 40-50 new games per year) - and of the games that have been released, not that many of them seem to actually be good.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth - kind of a niche title, not helped by the insane amount of Yakuza games released on PC since 2018, have not even finished Yakuza 7 yet.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League - major flop
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden - seems to be a bit of a flop
Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance - niche title
Outcast 2 - A New Beginning - niche title, seems to be a flop
Alone in the Dark - niche title, seems to be a flop
Horizon Forbidden West - 2 year old PS-game
Dragon's Dogma 2 - tons of performance issues
Ghost of Tsushima - 4 year old PS-game
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II - hopefully good
Black Myth: Wukong - another soulslike, could be decent
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl - could either be great, or a bugfest - if it ever gets released
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 - hopefully good

Then there are the other games which are supposed to come out this year, but does not have release dates:

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn - will likely suck because of SBI
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 could either be great, or a bugfest - if it ever gets released
Age of Mythology: Retold - remaster of 23 year old game
Steel Seed - niche indie-title
Commandos: Origins - niche title
Judas - hopefully good
Avowed - hopefully good
Until Dawn - 9 years old PS-game
Men of War II - hopefully good, probably superbuggy
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle - hopefully good
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess - niche title
NEO BERLIN 2087 - will likely suck
Unknown 9: Awakening - will likely suck because of SBI

And that's it, 25 games total, with only 10 games expected to be released in the first 6 months of the year. Remains to be seen how many other titles are coming out that are not announced yet I suppose, but still seems short of the usual number of games I normally play. I reckon some of the above games will get delayed until 2025 as well.

What about FF VII Rebirth? That has been very well received, in fact the highest rated Final Fantasy game in about 20 years.

It's not on PC and likely won't until next year at least. Hence why I'm only mentioning PC games.

There are like 5 games from that list, that I'm waiting for. It already looks like a good year for me.

If you feel pessimistic about 2024 that's your choice. Your feelings aren't universal or objective. It can be the worst year for games from your perspective, and the best year for games from another perspective. Both may be correct.

Nah, I see plenty of really good stuff coming out this year. At least if I check my wishlists on the various platforms.

I do add that I don't give a damn whether other people consider a game good, bad or a flop.

It's subjective. 5-10 good new games per one year is a pretty good year for me. And I'm looking at roughly that many scheduled for 2024 and some releases which already happened. It all depends on how much searching you are doing.

Awful. But at least it saves us money. The older games are cheaper and better.

You could make an argument about the fact that the AAA gaming industry is dying, yes. But a bad year? It is already better than 2023 in every regards with Palworld, HellDivers 2, Lethal company in late December last year...

Don't look at the trash, there is plenty of that every single year. Look at the good titles.

You're kinda looking only at the big studio releaes m8. That accounts for at best 20% of the games released in any given time period. And those niche titles.. yeah. so what if they are niche. They are great games if you enjoy that niche.

Though I am looking forward to AoM and the otehr Remasters. A good game is a good game regardless of the age.

I find a little contradictory that when someone mentions FF7Rebirth, you respond that it is likely to not come to PC this year so it does not count. And then you discard Horizon Forbidden West or Ghost of Tushima because they are two years old games even if they are new to PC.

That;s hiow these things usually Go. THEY aren't interested in, or already have those games so they don't count.

I am looking forward to play both Horizon and Tsushima, I think they will be in my top 10 for this year - but it's ironic since they are not actually new. FFVII might be new and good (I did not really care for the first remake though) but since I cannot play it this year on PC, I cannot rate it either. My point is merely that of the 25 available games this year that interest me, 3 are old PS games rather than new releases.

There are several indie titles in there as well; I'm just looking at games in the genres I am interested in; and so far I find this year pretty bleak compared to previous years. Niche titles means that they are games that I might like, but also might not. Merely find it weird that there is seemingly a drop of nearly 50% of interesting games in the span of a year.

I'm just going to weigh in on this, and I'm probably going to get flak from both sides... but FF7 Remake should've been an updated version of FF7. I don't care if it's an action RPG, it's the whole... Nomuraing of the story that makes it bad. He thinks he's a genius writer, nothing he has creative control over has good writing. And it *completely* ♥♥♥♥♥ on Sakuguchi's story about loss.

Yes, Final Fantasy 7 as a whole... is a story about trauma and loss and how we cope with it.
