Why do microtransactions and early access continue to exist?
Simple. we keep paying for them.
Where is the incentive for developers to stop this greedy behaviour? We get slapped and ask for more.

Because a horse in World of Warcraft made more money than Starcraft 2 did

People buy this stuff. They love this stuff. So they keep making it because its utterly more profitable than making an actual game, even if you make literally the most popular sci-fi RTS ever made.

Actually, most people don't like this stuff. Hence the constant complaints.

It's the small percentage of users that buy microtransactions. Most people spend little-to-nothing on extras. But just 10% of 10 million buying a $20 horse is a lot of money.

There's a problem with the thinking that "you can make more with mtx than a new game". Because it's not true. 'Baldur's Gate 3' is the proof. They've sold over 15 million copies. A large portion of which was at full price.

Can't be sure about the margins. All I know is that people love BG3 (haven't played it) but have endlessly complaints about WoW.

The problem is the time it took and the cost to make is not something most companies will take a risk over when the other option of adding microtransactions and other similar factors is a much safer and usually more profitable for them.

The gaming industry has gone through phases over the decades and microtransactions or early access and "free to play" games is the current meta really compared to what it used to be for a lot of games that previously were full priced games with monthly fee's that a lot of mmo's had or multiple dlc's over the games lifespan.

Even Baldur's Gate 3 has not come close to the income of these types of games in yearly income for a fraction of the cost of making them and there will always be games that are treated more of a business because of it.

It's one of the many reasons games are not over $100 as a average price these days like they should be when you factor in inflation and other rising costs compared to games from the 90's that were often $50-$60 at the time.

They continue to exist because gamers are smart, too smart.

I don't think I've ever been slapped with any Early Access game that I have had. I've had quite a good experience with Early Access games, to name a few below.

Subnautica 80 Hours
Subnautica Sub Zero 133 Hours
V Rising 166 Hours
Enshrouded 177 Hours

They have all ran pretty good with minimal problems and I've had my monies worth already. I'm not saying they haven't had any problems but I expect there to be problems when I get an Early Access game and so should everyone else. So, if you do a bit of digging prior to buying an Early Access game like you should with every other game then you shouldn't be surprised by any problems arising.

Games which don't enter Early Access can still have the same problems as those who do. It is just that you expect to have problems (or you should expect there to be problems) along with having games reset and the game changing direction mid development etc. You usually get an Early Access game cheaper as well than you would do at its full release.

Micro-transactions I don't bother with but again it is up to the person who owns the game to make the decision on whether or not those transactions are worth it to them. If they don't think they are then don't buy them, it's as simple as that. Anything else just boils down to a simple You Issue!

Overall, do your due diligence on a game like you should always do any way, whether it is Early Access or not. If you think it is worth your time and money then it probably is going to be worth getting. If something doesn't look like you expected then you have a couple hours game time in which to make up your mind and decide on whether to refund the game or not.

Problem being, of course, that EA games are often better than AAA games.

Microtransactions can go to hell and back as far as I am concerned tho.

That person is making vague threats that he's starting some kind of "project" to "go after the big companies" for microtransactions and wokeness. That's probably the "answers" he's offering to us.

The Steam forums are a wild place.

EA Games have been making unfinished EA games since about 2010 which carried over to every 3rd entry and later Battlefront. But because they don't have said EA tag (they do) it doesn't count?

Ubisoftstool switched over to GaaS because every game is a unfinished mess and started after Assassin's Creed Unity (2014) but in everyone's mind they make perfect games with no form of updates required whatsoever?

Even CDPR makes unfinished games. The Witcher 3 kept being patched for some 10 years, while CP77 was a jo-joke at release and for the next 2 years. When 2.0 came out or there about I tried it on GOG due their excellent refund policy and even then I saw NPCs doing T-poses or bugging out into walls. And you can still probably encounter it the moment you walk out of the apartment.

There is a simple solution for both: just don't pay for them.
Indeed.

As long as there is a demand, businesses will supply that demand.

People just need to get over the fact that their own personal pet peeves are meaningless to anyone else, and that their feelings may be in the minority.

I remember back in the 2000's getting some cool items were acualy required to have some good skills and dedication to a game. We were looking that max level players in the loby and thinking how cool they were.
Now anybody with money can get what ever they want. No dedication no skill required. Its kind a sad because it suppouse to mean something.

Personal accomplishments are just that - personal. Anyone who needs, or feels, validation from Internet Randos is doing it wrong.

You see, gaming has matured as those of us who cut our teeth and made video gaming popular have matured. We realized that there are better things to do in life and in a game than slogging through throwaway mobs in a dungeon for 8 hours a day just to get that one shiney for our charcater. We have concluded that saving our time to have fun playing games, instead of making playing a game a job, is the better way to go about actually enjoying the experience. So we'll pay for that shiney and spend those 8 hours enjoying life and having fun playing the game.
