Anyway, you talk about SpaceSim genre, but I see different genre types in your list. Do games like Homeworld (1,2,Remastered) count?
i used this specific word , because TASTE is very personal. So if you look on internet , you find many informations about "the best" game , so you ready to debunk the falseness of my statement , the STARSECTOR is the best spacesim so far?
anyway nice shot , despite homeworld 3 was delayed the exact day of the official release (Feb the 8th 2024 ...)
I think OP doesn't know what debunk means.
Stellaris
Master of Orion franchise
Star Wars: Empire at War
Some of these you'd need some kind of emulator to run on modern hardware, or actual ancient hardware/OS.
Descent 1,2,3 (Space fighter in deep space mining/asteroids etc, hope you like claustrophobia and vertigo)
Knights of the Old Republic (RPG/FPS) -bunch of Star Wars games from the era too, like Tie Fighter or X-Wing those more space shooter.
Elite 1,2,3 (Space fighter/trader/explore)
Mass Effect 1,2,3 (RPG/FPS)
Infinity War (Space fighter)
Halo series (FPS)
X-Com (Squad based, isometric combat)
More modern.
Everspace (arcade looter shooter, space fighter)
Ikaruga (top down bullet hell space arcade shooter)
R-Type (side scroller, bullet hell, arcade shooter)
All I can recall, have fun.
Nexus the Jupiter incident: very atmospheric, challenging gameplay, excellent small fleet combat and an interesting story.
Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy: Also has a lot of small fleet combat, is a precursor to the Battlestar Galactica game (basically identical mechanics but it's own setting), with branching missions some which require you to play specific ways to unlock.
Starcom Nexus: Brilliant story, and a nice modular ship construction, I prefer to have multiple ships under my control but this was still extremely entertaining.
Outside of those personally I preferred Starpoint Gemini Warlords to 2. I haven't played much of 3 yet as it's early access.
Elite Dangerous was fun for the first 60 or so hours as I worked my way up to an Asp Explorer, while I play for another 100 or so hours after that it was growing more and more stale, and the jump from the content I was able to handle to things like handling Thargoids on my own was significant (if I'd been able to make the jump would probably have been fun for longer).
I've heard good things about Spacebourne (1 and 2) but haven't played either much, and X4 already has similar enough content so I don't think I will. I'd be more likely to play the earlier X series games (which I haven't I started with X4) than pick up Spacebourne, as they would have a lot of similarities and I'd be mostly playing for story and I like the X universe.
So my list would include:
Star Control series
Star Trek: Armada series
Star Trek: Starfleet Command
Star Fleet II - Krellan Commander Version 2.0
Nexus the Jupiter incident
Imperium Galactica series
Conquest Frontier Wars
ORB: Off-World Resource Base
Star Wolves series
Master of Orion 2
Sword of the Stars
Star General
Sins of a Solar Empire series
Haegemonia
Star Wars Rebellion
Pax Imperia
Starpoint Gemini
Homeworld series
Stellar Monarch series
Distant World series
Polaris Sector
Galactic Civilization series
Stars in Shadow
Interstellar Space
