Steam reviews not counted?!
I recently noticed the little star icon in steam reviews, stating which is counted in the overall review.. This prompted me to look at my reviews, and several of them say theyre not counted for one reason or other.. I have bought all my games through steam, so for some to claim theyre product keys being added from off steam, is completely false..

What is the purpose of this system?! This looks nefarious, to hide some reviews from the overall rating. Every single game I have, was purchased from your steam store!

There are filters you can change for off-topic (aka review bombing) and bought outside of Steam reviews. Preventing review manipulation isn't something nefarious in my opinion.

And do we really need 3rd thread about that?

Gifted games are not counted either.

This is not the same thing.. there is a 5 sides star that is now tagged on all reviews.. Some colored in, and some hollow, stating if the game was bought on Steam, or a key activated from 3rd party.. I only buy games through steam,. and have several of these tagged as activated off site products, which are then not counted in the overall score

Why do you care what posts are made in Steam? I never understood why some of you feel the need to police a public forum

I guess I could understand that.. Though its still a verified owner of the game, and as such, should still be counted in the overall review score. there does not appear to be a benefit to the consumer, by hiding review scores

I actually do have about a dozen gifted games. those are not the ones i have that have been incorrectly labeled as activated products.

People who redeem keys are 'verified owners' as well since they literally own the game through an activation key.

The measure is to prevent devs from giving away games for positive reviews. If they just stopped it at key redemption, then devs could just directly gift the game instead.

But why are some of my purchased games being labeled as keys activated, and not being counted? I can pull up my purchase history, and clearly see that I bought the games through Steams store.. Thats not a code I activate, and yet, I have this hollow Star on my review, stating its not counted, because its a product key activated from elsewhere.

This is somethign I can 100% verifiy, and its on several ofmy reviews.

you beat me to it.. Thank you

Although this begs the quesiton.. Why allow reviews on free dlc at all? And how does it get ANY rating, if none can be counted?! lol

Goto any free dlc page, and you will see plenty of reivews that ARE counted in the overall score, and others that are not... This feels wrong

If you have ever played a game on a free weekend, it looks like your review will not be counted if you decide to purchase said game (my Tyranny review for example)

Actually, I have to retract the answer.. Ive now found other reviews of mine (Vermintide 2, and 40k Mechanicus) that arent counted, that I did purchase, were not free, were not gifted or product keys, and that I did not play on a free weekend..

You can still read them if you want the info
Its the WHY that bothers me.. The entire reason behind reviewing, is to inform others.. Many will only ever glance at the score (its stupid, but its true) We already have problems believing reviews on sites like Rotten Tomatoes, and other sources, that HAVE been fudging the numbers.. Steam is a source that is still cited, and one that I trusted, until now. Why are they now messing with the overall ratings? That is not for the benefit of the consumer/gamer

The why is simple, devs exploited free giveaways to get positive reviews. Anything not paid for on the store thus doesnt get to review or the review doesnt count. Steam reviews are to inform CUSTOMERS by CUSTOMERS. If ya didnt pay, you arent a customer.

Same reason literally every other store does the same thing, you have to be an actual customer to leave a review at all in most places.
You contradicted yourself there..

Do you family share your account or access a family shared out of curiosity? Wondering if that could be a factor.

Does the account you family share with also own that game? Just wondering as if its a bug that is potentially the reason. Id still make a support ticket and ask them either way

That one also shows it marked as free FYI
Rizilliant Feb 9, 2024 @ 12:49pm
Yep, that one says its free also.. Thats ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

So it knows when I played a free weekend, but it doesnt know what I didnt get it free?!

I see zero benefit to curating which reviews are counted.. Ive never clicked that box, even when I write when I tried a game on free weekend, and I write when It was gifted.
