Why did everyone use gamespy before?
So I came across this video

And I was bambozled. Why did almost literally everyone use this service? Does everyone use proprietary now?

because the internet back then wasn't like it is now. it was much more decentralized in technology and on the smaller scale, while being more centralized in the backbone and larger scale.

back then, developers made all their own ♥♥♥♥, all their own networking stuff, and there wasn't the cdns of today. the backbone wasn't as commercialized as it is now, and what was there at the time was geared towards powering private corporate/business networks and the web. you couldn't just buy all the internet infrastructure to make multiplayer work. gamespy was predated by something called mplayer which was designed to make multiplayer easier for players and developers. mplayer was like twitter or youtube. it showed up, it was useful, people started using it, then companies followed. gamespy bought mplayer, started adding more features to try to make a business of it to sell use of it to developers. once the backbone became commercialized, and the major software companies started providing general-purpose software and network services aka the original "cloud", and developers started making third-party engines with in-built handling of networking software and systems, gamespy wasn't needed.

gamespy was past its heydey by 2008 or so. any controversy later on was a result of this.

its not "the company" its drm. all drm works like that. any game with drm functions the same way. if the game died its because developers didnt wanna fix it so it would keep working for insert excuse.

This sounds really interesting to grasp... anywhere I can read more about it?
I remember GameSpy. I could never get the damn thing to work, especially with Black & White.
I did use it just before became gamespy... good ol' times
We used it because we didn't have Steam.

When I started playing CS in 2002, that's what we used.

I tried to use it to play Close Combat back in the day. I THINK it might have worked for Medal of Honor Allied Assault, but could be wrong.

Indeed. However, it was still easier to use GameSpy.
The name is as hillarious as spynet from microsoft.
For me gamespy was something that came with a game. I did not "use" it.

cause back then we owned the games
cause back our servers can be literal /pol/ branches and nobody ever complained about that
cause back then ASE was a thing, it worked better than your average Steam server browsers, could be easily linked with IRC and you calso set up different launchers or rules depending on which server you were planning to play in

it was all you needed to play online games, every community had his own forum, no commie mods, just flamewars here and there, official forums were frowned upon cause fanboys and commie mods, then Steam sadly happened, but most important consoles with online services sadly happened and it all turned into a shetty p2p mess and heavily monitored communities started to happened cause apparantely saying bad things online can hurt people you don't care about, but they are forcing you to care about them, and call you with bad things if you still don't care about them, and it gets even worse if you play the reverse card against them
It was not really "everyone".

There were alternatives too, such as MSN Gaming Zone, GArena, Hamachi and so on. :)

I used to play ReVolt LAN via the Gaming Zone, as well as WarCraft ][, despite the Gaming Zone being a Microsort service and not Blizzard's one. :)

None of that really wasn't a surprise to me at all. Nothing lasts forever. It is the fact there are people who refuse to acknowledge this that is the real problem.

Any game outside blizzsheet, possibly C&C Red Alert who used a client side server discover utility, some old ass games with just lan support and not really sure about Novalogic games, ALL used GameSpy services for the online component.

You could either install the full client or just use the server browser built inside the game to connect to online servers.

ASE or All Seeing Eye was what made the use GameSpy services the best, cause it could find any kind of server, plus all the custom ones created by accidentally making blizzard mad by modifying their forgotten client and feeding server availability query into GameSpy services, it was the same for certain custom made C&C Red Alert servers and possibly more games played through MAME.

Certain games like Thievery required some modding which was later patched by ASE crew itself, sadly around 2005 or so Yahoo bought ASE and for whatever reason they started faking up the client, at first you could use some workarounds to make the client update the server lists, but then around 2007 they basically cut the connection between you and GameSpy tracker, not sure who paid them to do so, but I suppose Activision, Ubisoft, EA and Microsoft are the bigger culprits.

As for Novalogic client I don't really remember which uses it got, or if we were at one point forced to use it, certainly I used it for F-22 Lightining 3 online sessions, it sucked a whole bunch of balls but I don't remember it being used for Delta Force nor Joint Ops but I could be wrong.
