50 £ $ € GIFT CARD SCAM TO WATCH OUT FOR!!!
Not sure how to start but I've been scammed twice before so i guess this is a reminder that it still happens. It almost happened again. So if i change my profile to Russian characters or start selling all of my inventory (very unlikely) since steamguard is there. Here is everything i know.

TLDR: people send you MISSPELLED giftcard link dont click report to steam save id report block maybe block or save their friends id, Change passwords etc.

Not sure how to post images but the message looks sorta like this

this is for you - //steammcoomunintyblahblah then some random numbers f3j45s53diooi69odob

Or something like that. So what i did when i got that message was

1. - Try and confirm that it was my "friend" usually they don't respond. Not someone else.
2. - Take screenshots of their profile and the chat to use it as refrence if steamsupport asks
3. - Report them block them if their friends list is public remember for future refrence.
4. - Use steamguard on your phone to generate new codes.
Alternativley--(change your password on your gmail and steam account.) just use steamguard.

5. - Use antivirus on anything to do with steam or anything that looks like mal or bloatware.
6. - Delete all new things that get installed just sort by date and you should find it.
7. - Log in to with your new password and you should be good to go. keyword being should.

If they got ahold of the account or rec-codes somehow contact steam as quickly as possible.

Theoretically you only really have to report block and have steamguard. They usually scurry away once you involve steam though so. food for thought.

Sorry if it's kind of a mess I'm tired. stay vigilant people! :cozyspaceengineersc:

Damn i've been scammed with this issue. All of my items are gone whereas i have Steam Guard of my account. I don't know what to do, just ask some help with Steam Support. Any ideas please? I really want my items are back :((( fyi, i think the person who gave the scam message was my friend cz the profile picture is so similiar :((((((((((

All the steps, in order...

Scan for malware. https://www.malwarebytes.com/ or with whatever

Deauthorize all devices https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage

Change your password on a secure device.

Generate new back up codes. https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage

Revoke the api key (this should be empty) https://steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey

Your items are gone for good.

Read the Steam Item Restoration Policy.

another point is to not give out credentials to betting sites.

Everything people need to know in addition to (not-at-all) common sense:

Yes, but here's the thing, the people who NEED to read these PSAs, are the people who don't and won't. They don't even come here until after the fact, by which time, it's too late.

As evidenced by the scam support articles I've linked to. If those were read by everyone, we wouldn't need this topic...

Just remove it. All it takes is someone with malicious intent to buy the URL and make it work, and now you gave them free advertising. Users are going to click on links whether they're suppose to or not. Better not to provide one to begin with in this instance.

This is for my own peace of mind also. It's not advertising.

So said all the other people who came before you making the very same PSA to warn the very same people who never bothered to read all the very same PSAs that came before because they "never had a reason to read" them. Oh, but this time, its going to be different, for realsies, right?

Are you that afraid you'll fall for the same scam again?

If you only need it for showing to friends, you'd be better off keeping it as a text file on your PC that you can then copy and paste from. This topic won't last forever, even if it's not locked, it will eventually purge anyway.

It will only "purge away" if we keep telling people what to do how to deal with it. Steam has gotten my account back twice. Cause of my own naive mind. I never said it was for my friends. It is for refrence if i need to recap. I really need to sleep my man. We all got our own ways to deal with scammers.
