Free to Play Games?
After 30+ years of gaming I find myself still having negative views about these games and I'm wondering if my thoughts are still valid or not from all those years ago.

My thoughts are that they are their to rip us off in some manner by being forced to pay real money for stuff in the game - the pay to win theory thing?

I ask because I think some of these games look and sound brilliant way above the usual games and DLC etc. It happens time and time again I can spot these games way before finding out they are free to play.

Can someone please update my brain by informing me of the facts and motives of these game please. Are any legit even though they are free to play. Many thanks.

f2p games are actually the most costly

you either need to play thousands of hours to get what you want, or just buy the thing you want cause grinding for is too time consuming and boring

also you can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in diablo immortal and not get the thing you want cause it's rng based

That's an interesting and quite disturbing answer, potato

Any other views on this subject fellas/ladies?

I mean, I play several f2p games that have zero "pay 2 win" aspect to them.

Warframe, TF2, etc.

The majority of free to play games aren't toxic with "GIVE US YOUR MONEY."
It's just there's enough of the bad ones that all of them get lumped together.

Thanks Leonardo Da Pinchi. Just asking here but do you think those games you mention genuinely don't benefit in some way. Simply one wonders quite naturally the motive when there is no payment up-front.

Sure there's paywalls, but EVERY f2p game is going to either have paywalls, or microtransactions. But there's plenty out there that have tons of free content, or methods to grind/earn premium currency.

GW2 has paywalls for certain aspects, still a TON of content available, for free.

TF2, only paywall is using communication features, which 99% of public players don't use anyway/

Warframe, all game content is 100% available to players via hard work, Plat just speeds the grind up for unlocking content. And you can farm plat pretty easily via farming semi-rare items and selling them to players.

Of course the games benefit from income, but money doesn't actually impact the game's mechanics or playstyle.

TF2, legit all money can do is unlock chat features, and give you cool cosmetics.

Warframe, all the premium currency does is speed up obtaining items. Everything is still obtainable, and you can farm the premium currency via trading.

Hi davidb11. May I ask the same question I have asked of Leonardo Da Pinchi, above please?

Leonardo Da Pinchi

Thanks so much.

I'm hearing the word 'content' a lot which is obvious now to me in this thread and how important it is to these games. So thanks for that insight :-)

I've put thousands of hours into Warframe, and yes, made purchases, and I'm still not even close to "completing" it.

And everything I've obtained, can be farmed by a patient person who just farms and trades, but pays zero actual money to the game.

So the pleasure you get from playing it is worth the occasional purchases. This is very interesting and goes a long way to my understanding. Terrific

It depends on the free to play games. I have seen some with no in game purchasing like Crusader Kings 2 and one of The Sims game. Yes, you are only getting the base game in certain situations.

I've been playing Gems of War for 4,5 years now, on mobile. It's also on Steam. Never spend a cent on it. Levelling is slow when not spending money, yes, but that's fine. I play it inbetween when I have to wait or so, you know, play 20 minutes here and there.

Would devs prefer if one spends money? Of course. Is it needed? Absolutely not.

It really depends on the game. Some are truly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and you gotta play a thousand hours or pay to get an item, others only sell cosmetic items.

LOL. Gems of War is a game I spent a bit too much money on my phone a few years ago.
