I've started to appreciate games more and more over the years.
Me few years ago I wouldn't care much about the games story, atmosphere and visuals, but now I care about it a lot. The first game that had me TRY to focus on the story was SOMA, which I finished somewhere between 2022 and 2023. When I first tried the game, I wanted it to be purely survival horror, but it turned out to be pretty easy and story heavy which wasn't my appeal back then. But after the 2nd time I tried to finish the game whilst focusing on the story, and guess what? I had an existential crisis after the ending of SOMA, yeah the story is pretty good in SOMA:steamthumbsup:. And then last year I completed God of War 2018, and that game became my most favorite game of all time cause of the amazing story and visuals it has. The whole journey of Kratos and Atreus was just spectacular! The ending made me cry too not going lie ;)

Now fast forward to 2024 and I completed Red Dead Redemption 2, oh my f***ing god, this game is SOOO GOOD!!! Now it is in my opinion, the BEST game of ALL TIME. The visuals, gameplay and story is perfect! I took the game slow and nice, one of the only games that I've played that has made me try to listen to every single piece of dialogue that Arthur Morgan and everyone else has. The ending made me bawl my eyes out ;(

And also when I say that I appreciate games more is that I now try to complete more of the game and appreciate the smaller details that it has too. Games are art, especially if the game is made by developers who have passion for the game. Games have been a big part of my life, from playing the good ol' ps2 and xbox 360 to playing on my gaming pc, I will never stop gaming. I will experience every masterpiece that the gaming industry has to offer.

(Waiting for Red Dead Redemption 3 though :))

Makes me wonder why you we playing games if none of that interested you ;-)

All I can suggest why I am still playing games is because I have recently started trying different genres and It's has been an enlightening experience. This could possibly be the same as your experience to a degree because it seems your years gaming has 'forced' you have reassed your requirements from your gaming.

Good happy story for a change :lunar2019smilingpig:

I mean a few years ago (3-4 years) I only played games for the gameplay, and my attention span wasn't the best either, so my ass couldn't bother sitting through long cutscenes and long non-action stuff.

Ah I still can't stand all that tedious stuff ;-)

Having started gaming in its infancy I grew to appreciate it very quickly. Playing the original Pong, P+P games like Dungeons + Dragons, DragonQuest (yes, the one suppressed by TSR), and the Elric game from Chaosium, Star Trek, James Bond, Atari, TI994/a, Commodore 64, ... the list could go on. I even played a card game called Nuclear Escalation.

Just imagine for one second if the first idea that lead to gaming never started. If that doesn't make you appreciate gaming I really don't know what would.

What kind of games did you play before these ones? What drew you to video games before, do you think? Perhaps with age comes the maturity and patience to listen and invest yourself?

You definitely named a few very fascinating games. I or my partner have played all of the games you mentioned.

As a child, I was drawn to storylines, but "easier" ones. Legend of Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, and anything with animals. Now, I can say I still love ones with animals and scenery, but I'm glued to psychological because of my personal passions and interests. Maybe you just needed time to bridge a gap between your love of zoning out and relaxing, but also your passions in life.

Keep trying open-world games, story-rich, and blends of action, survival, etc. You'll have a lot of fun getting lost in the worlds many amazing people out there create! Have fun!

My dad bought Pong (or however it was done) in what 1977?

I had a Commodore 64 I think it was where you had to load games via a cassette tape and it took about 15 mins if I recall.

So from 1977 I have been gaming (;-))

That's 47 years from when I was 14 - ahem :steamhappy:

When I started gaming, I was playing them ps2 movie games, like Wall-E and the Incredibles. Then I moved on to xbox 360 and played a lot of lego games, plants vs zombies, skylanders, kinect games, etc.

Then in 2018 I moved on to ps4, which came with star wars battlefront 2 and little big planet 3. I mostly played little big planet cause of it's custom levels it has, was pretty fun making my own levels too! But in 2019, I got a PC from my brother! It was an old pc tho, with a gtx 960 graphics card, so it couldn't play all of the new games that were coming out so I had to stick with older games that could handle my PC, like unturned, minecraft, turkov, 2D indie games, etc..

Fast forward to 2023, I finally upgraded my PC and now it can play games pretty well at 1440p high settings, sure was a lot of saving money to get the PC though. Now I can actually play triple A games without having crashes or massive lag! Which then led me to playing God of War, Dying Light 2, Elden Ring and Red Dead Redemption 2! I'm very much grateful that I can play all of these amazing games now without having any issues with the game or my PC.

I think my games interest was changing as I matured, as a little gremlin I liked the ps2 movie games, now they're just nostalgic to me.

Getting older indeed can mean a change in tastes and the way you experience games. Stay open to other experiences like you do, perhaps try different genres and find out what more you do or do not like. Neat to see you enjoying our hobby and finding your "you" within the hobby.
