From years of console - I loved Band of Brothers, Battlefield, World at War/COD series of, and even Wolfenstein - yes, even that horror one is there because it still had WW2 theme and action to it and in one of the newer updates it had a mission for you to go and kill/shoot) or poison Hitler himself, lol. I digress. Shifting from console to PC-based games, I tried my hand at an Old game called: Air Warrior (it was a multiplayer online game with at the time, about 22,000-14,000 players worldwide, decreasing numbers from its dropping hay-day high player base counts, and you added a pgm called Roger Wilco to be able to Voice-chat, communicate, with 'teammates giving your RW Id # so they could speak via headset/mics' to plan attacks' on enemy bases of Allied-vs-Axis 'style' (4 of em) across the 'game world' map. Air Warrior-AW-was a mix of tanks/airport/Aircraft carried type ships, all controllable by KB,mouse or Joystick/footpads, (even an IRL-like black out consciousness G-force of Aircraft you flew IF you wanted that tougher option) to play with - and airports had Anti-aircraft type vehicles to defend the bases from Airplanes (bombers/fighters/etc, and paratrooper carriers like Gooney-Bird types of planes to drop chutes on a base you were capturing. There were: ME 262-fighters, b-17/24/25 bombers, Black Widows, Stuka, FW-190's, Kates, Zero's, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Corsairs, p47's, many others etc...) 5-6 different countries 'sides' represented with about 150-250 vehicle choices in total. Was a lotta fun playing with friends you made online - and formed 'squads' of worldwide players with in your squads - I had max 30 players in mine, and made nose-art/paint scheme for each of our squad members to 'put' onto their 'planes/vehicles' when we mass-bombed, attacked, sortied a rival base. With up to 12 ppl 'manned' in 1 B17-w/ a pilot/co-pilot/full gunner glasses as positions to go on a raid with squad - all communicating with each other during real-time play w/ escort p51's and other fighters, Goonys dropping paratroops, it was an unbelievable Very Early multi-player WOW type of experience coming from standalone console gaming.
Few years later of console/PC gaming both - I went mostly PC gaming because Modding became a HUGE option to 'tweak' your game play and endless variety of ways to play same game, but Mods often fail away, break, not update and fall prey to attrition, so always a changing affair.
TODAY - PC gaming rules the way to go, consoles suk, imo
I still play horror based games, some modded WW2 based and others - but my suggestion is to at least LOOK at World Of Warships (Wows)
it's a FREE download, free to play game, and has manay thousands-thousands of worldwide players with 3 main Country servers-Asia/Russia and the NA (N.America).
It's my Go-To very fun game - I have 197 Naval "ships" of 375 ship total avail, in my port - from CV-Carrier, to Battleship, Light and Heavy Battle Cruisers, Destroyers, and Submarines - to pick from when playing. WG, Wargaming, best known for World of Tanks, are always trying 2 improve combat/game/options and have done a great job - I'm in my 4th year playing without any chance leaving anytime soon - there are players who started almost 10 years ago who still play it some everyday as Live YT and Twitch streamers with hundreds of followers.
Wow's itself is WW! and WW2 based gameplay of Naval Ships - but the CV's have planes you control to dive bomb, torp and rocket fire on other ships - enemies. (No friendly fire mode - recent change - is ONLY option now, unfortunately, too many ppl torped their own players/team and changes were made outta necessity.)
Take a good look and you may have a new free too play game to spend 100's of hours playing.
I am squad commander of a small team-not the top Commander, but I'm recruiting so lemme know if interested in game/squad - I help teach newbs the ropes to get 'gewd' at their 'boots' and the one's I like to sail, OR if anyone else interested, too. (partial name - BobcatsRaiders in Wows.
