You're not just installing.
You're also decompressing the file as well.

If your finding such things are very slow - its likely due to a number of reasons:

1: Low RAM
2: Too many things running at the same time.
3: A program hogging all the "bandwidth" in terms of your computers ability to do tasks. (A good example is an "on the fly" virus scanner
4: Storage device is at end of life and needs replacement (yuck!)

You mention file corruption - this means 4 is more likely as a culprit.
Run tests - check health.

Idk my storage device is only a few months old and has been working fine on everything else. I don't usually have anything else open besides firefox also this is what the install looks like https://imgur.com/a/okCLaBW
also the time to complete jumps up and down from 3 minutes to 3 hours

LOL in all fairness your test example is a MASSIVE game.
That's going to take time to uncompress - even then its concerning its so slow.

I suggest testing with a smaller game - also may want to run some diagnostics on your system check OS health/hardware - somethings amiss if your having so much trouble.

At some point it will uncompress and download at same time so it gets funny funny.

I saw that behaviour with games on HDD, switched to a dedicated SSD (not the one the OS is on) and no longer see any drops to 0.

get yourself an M.2 hard drive and all issues just vanish.
It is the stupid congested way Steam Valve set up their client to download and install simultaneously causing backlog slowdown.
