2: You need an install image to install Windows 10 - download it from the site and choose your installation method a USB key is apt as its the most popular method to do that.
In any case you should read the instructions before proceeding as with any major install.
ALL Instructions.
PS: Hopefully you bought a legitimate key - they no longer are available to be bought/sold since last year.
This..... its an ugly mess when upgrading 2 iterations worth of OS.
Try this:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Click "Update Now" near the top.
If it doesn't work, then download the ISO file and put it on a thumbdrive or burn it to a DVD. The put in your key when prompted.
tried that page first thats where i got the error message
what ya mean? you mean i bought a KEY that wont work? sighs go figure, i hate microsoft and Steam for ending win 7
for a clean install
first
create a backup of your files
then,
on this page
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO
do what the drop down menus tell you
select edition and such
download the iso copy of win 10 to your computer when prompted
get a program called rufus
it is a usb boot creator
you will need a usb drive
insert it in an available port
start rufus
it has it's own drop downs to follow
edit: it will usually select the usb you put in but make sure
it will create a bootable usb drive
leave it in your pc and restart it
use whatever method your board uses to get to your boot menu
select the usb drive
it will start the install process
you will get to a page that asks for that key
backup anything you dont want to lose on a separate drive.
grab a usb flash drive (a small 8GB one is fine)
then download the OS iso of choice from microsoft.
download rufus
run rufus and create the bootable iso from your windows iso, onto the usb drive.
turn off pc, disable/disconnect your pc from the router, plug the usb drive in, load bios boot menu and choose the usb drive, then run the OS installer.
choose the option to keep everything (programs, data, ect..), a few choices (internet connection and account creation) should be auto skipped because you already have an account (i assume) and you disable the internet connection.
afterwards, go through and run all programs, games, ect... note anything that doesnt run on first try and reinstall them, update all your drivers (all of them) and gpu driver, either from the hardware manufacturers, windows update, or a program like driver booster (excluding gpu as you always get that from manufacturer).
you could run through and make sure you have all and are all updated, runtime libraries, DirectX and net frameworks.
run through windows update until it has nothing left and you should be good to go with maybe a touch of disk cleanup (with "windows update cleanup" checked) and a highlight and delete of "temp" files inside the %temp% folder, to clear out all the temp program folder and temp update folders.
------------------
on the other hand, if your pc doesnt run great to begin with, due to failed maintenance, updates, ect..., then you may want to consider afresh install (done the same way as above, but you dont choose to keep everything), this will avoid any current issues and/or issues that may arise afterwards.
My comp i built myself, it runs good, just having to upgrade to win 10 to keep all my games
I would strongly recommend a fresh install, windows 7 to 10 is not always a smooth process, though Windows 10 to 11 usually works fine, and if your key don't work and you didn't get it from Microsoft, contact the place/person you bought it from, if that don't work, well tough luck, the risks you take when buying from a 3rd party. But you can still Windows 10 without a key, you just wont be able to change the backgrounds, colors, task bar stuff and a water mark but other wise it will still work just fine.
Good luck!
I bought 2 Windows 10 keys just before they slammed the door shut on further sales last year.
Each one came with a very long winded email on instructions or a link to a website with many different approaches on how to install and setup Windows.
That and building ones own computer and not knowing how to do this?
Yeah....right.
It's literally just clicking accept/next on all of the menus when installing 8 and up.
You can't really fail it.
