It seems we can still play our Win7 games, post Jan 1...
https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4784-4F2B-1321-800A

"We expect the Steam client and games on these older operating systems to continue running for some time without updates after January 1st, 2024, but we are unable to guarantee continued functionality after that date".

I suppose it depends on the game?

Anyhow, i want to thank the poster "Monkehmaster" for bringing this new change to my attention.

Obviously, Mr Newell and Valve have been dealing with a lot of backlash. Hopefully, we can keep up the pressure, and have them punt this disaster to a later date. But this is a start.

I also want to thank many posters, who aided me, and many others, getting beaten regularly demanding clarity on this issue.

Thank you Valve, and Mr Newell for at least showing some more clarity on this matter.

And thank you for the rewards.

Thankfully, your point of view is not relevant, since has no bearing on the effects that will happen as they always have. The OS will be unable to keep doing things others can, will no longer be able to access things anymore, and will eventually be trapped and locked away in its own environment.
Hello
Aye probably but it will take time for that till some standard evolve and spray.
Generally only takes a few months after support is dropped. Especially for games with launchers that are kept up to date, gaming services, and stores.

Prime Example, Windows XP. I could log into Steam just fine, I still can if choose to. But unable to access the community content, download servers, store page etc. Doesn't matter if using the last version of Steam that supported XP, or the newest Steam Client.

Seems like their way of meeting demands without admitting fault. A compromise of sorts.

What were they even thinking with this deadline. It's way too short for a real world scenario. Plenty of other software projects will plan these things 5 years ahead and regularly remind users very clearly.

They can't leave old, outdated clients running for too long. They can't support win7 forever. This is true.

It's also true that you can't pull the carpet on this many people this quickly. They didn't execute/handle this well and the backlash is well earned.

What demand are they meeting?

It looks like all they did was clarify that it isn't a killswitch update like it read when it was first announced. They even still have the original announcement in the post.

That's where you differ vs the majority in the gaming and tech industry. People don't wait last minute and struggle as you do, and have moved on years ago already.

Judging by how the app was done, a few months is a very accurate guess.

hello
Tech industry is a bit different than a home user for many reasons. And i am not struggle, as you say, setup a new os will take me an hour or so so i do not see any problem here and do not see any reasons to do that now.
See it won't change anything even if i were using your beloved windows 10 , we were together chatting and exchanging point of view here on this forum.
You see you can be a cool guy @Komarimaru.

End of support does not means the same thing as end of life of dead
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End-of-life_care
It is exactly that, no updates to your launchers and os means you can't use said programs anymore = dead.

But if you want to split hairs here then we can call it deceased.

Sure I can use my old windows 3.1 also but in terms the support for the os is dead.
When you finally move out of your parents house, it doesn't (or at least shouldn't) mean that you died. It just means that your parents are no longer the ones supporting you.

end of support =/= death

Likewise, just because software has been abandoned by its original creators, it doesn't mean that it is dead.

False equivalence.

I'd also venture to say that Rangers needs to play games on a proper PC. Once you actually play games the way they are intended regardless of how old they are, going from 15 to 20 frames per second and 800x600 to actually playing them smooth and the way they are intended. He'll never go back. I've experienced it and I know others in this thread have experience it as well. It doesn't matter if the game is 5 years old or 20, playing it on a machine that can run it as intended makes a world of difference.

Well, i get what you're saying there, but i think you know, i'm a console player, and most all of my gaming, is done on console. If not, i'd def understand, but the games i play here, on this old clunker, are games of the PS2 era.

And truth be told, even at the low definition, and framerates, are a hell of a lot better then there. And of course, the mods make those games great, as compared to PS2.

I can only speak for myself, i could never make PC gaming my main. It's too expensive, these are the hurdles we have to go thru, controller support is hit or miss, and i just need quality Support.

Xbox, i still call them on a phone. Here, it's all lone justice, and for a person who knows relatively nothing about computers, i need a quality service. That im willing to pay for.

And so, as for me, i'm def not picky, self centered, entitled or anything like that. Not with my expectations here, only wanting my old games.

All i want to do, is to continue to play the games, i did not get free, earned, purchased and expect to have access to my content.

That is all i ask, and at least now, given this latest clarification by Valve, we can end this "Doomsday Jan 1" talk, at least as far as our games.

Lol, the man just clarified, and is correct, i play PS2 era games, at 800x600 at 20 frames a second, on this old clunker. And ALL this old man wants to do, is keep is his games.

I mean, for crying out loud dude, pardon me for being so uppity and picky lol.

If you do want to play some PC games, I would suggest grabbing a Steam Deck. It is basically a the Console version of Steam. You can play it like a hand held or hook a dock up to a TV and play it like a console by connecting it to the dock.

It just sucks because it doesn't play some older games. Like it won't let me play Overlord on it.
