steamtrades.com legit?
Looking at this trading site I found, they want people to log in with their Steam ID. Is this safe? Someone could potentially hijack steam accounts that way.

Is steamtrades.com owned by Valve?

Steam does not own any other website then this one, any other website saying Valve owns them is a scam, Valve also does not support any 3rd party sites

VERY legit. But very not affiliated with Valve. This is the message you get:

"Note that www.steamtrades.com is not affiliated with Steam or Valve"

It doesn't stop it from being a fine website. The reason is, it does NOT use your password nor your ID. You are given a unique ID on steamtrades. All you do is basically login WITH steam. Unlike scam websites which may ask for info, this one does not ask anything.

And yes, I used steam trades for over 10 years. I have never been scammed.

By signing into www.steamtrades.com through Steam:
  • Your Steam login credentials will not be shared.
  • A unique numeric identifier will be shared with www.steamtrades.com. Through this, www.steamtrades.com will be able to identify your Steam community profile and access information about your Steam account according to your Profile Privacy Settings.
  • Any information on your Steam Profile page that is set to be publicly viewable may be accessed by www.steamtrades.com.

All 3rd party websites are use at your own risk.

If your items get stolen they will not be returned.
If the account gets hijacked and game or VAC banned it will not be removed.

I clicked the "log in with Steam ID" (not sure of the exact wording) button, to see what the next step is. I did not intend to actually sign in.

But on this next page it does say "Note that www.steamtrades.com is not affiliated with Steam or Valve".

But they are already making a guess of the Steam username. How are they able to make a guess of Steam ID? I have not entered any ID info on their site.

Am I at risk already?
I'm not clicking any further of course.

Not supported but the function WITHIN steam to login with steam is still there sooo... I would tell the OP to always research before they do anything but steamtrades doesn't pretend to be part of valve anyway. I also login to barter and isthereanydeal using my steam account.

Rule #1 to protect your account, NEVER manually enter data on any websites. In fact, never enter your ID or PASSWORD anywhere that is not steam. But these websites allowing us to login with steam can only take what a normal user would see visiting your steam profile.

You're not at risk. And they did not guess anything. The ID that you see being named on the website you see (official steam website) is steam itself asking if you want to login with this account link to that website (steamtrades). As I said, steamtrades can't see your ID.

In fact, the ID that will be seen on steamtrades is a publicly viewable ID that anyone can see by using a website to find your public information and the reason that they will put it out there (that anyone can see anyway) is to ID you if you scam someone though a trade.

Here's MY account. I'm literally putting my ST out there for you to see what can be seen and you can be sure that all of this is easily found elsewhere. Knowing who is a scammer is key in steam trading. Surely you understand if you even plan to use a trading website.

If it is Steam itself offering me to log in there with my Steam ID, that means Steam has approved that site?

You are misunderstanding and frankly everyone here needs to stop complicating this and simply say "NO"

What you are looking at is an API Interface that is using Steams interface to tempt you to log in.

So yes THAT part is official - but it is a trap - period.

Just close that window and walk away before you regret it.

People should stop being technical and call it like it is - its a threat - its not trustworthy - period.

Anything outside Steam's client or their primary domain is suspect and not trustworthy. Period.

So if you don't understand what I just said - close the window and walk away.
That's it - no more no less.

no, that's not what it means, lotta sites have that prompt, it doesn't mean it's valve/steam approved

It's not "approved" per say but I am sure that if they minded a website using their name, they would sue them or C&D them or whatever. Steamtrades is not like those shady CSGO sites where people get scammed all the time because they manually enter info...

Steam trades instead uses the much safer "steam account link" system that steam itself uses. It does not uses your ID (your login info) or your password. Instead, it links your steam # ID (which is unique for every account) to make a new account and a new unique ID.

The reason the account link matters in steam trades is because someone on steamtrade who plans to trade with you will be able to verify if you're the person trading with them or not. As you may know, some people will try to impersonate you to scam people at times.

Check my account linked above on the post to see what kind of data people can actually see. It's all secure because no manual info is ever entered. You should also NEVER give your ID or your password to anyone anyway. This is the basic of common sense. ST is safe.

That is very clear, thank you.

How can the API there fish out my Steam ID? There must be a connection/leak somewhere.
