New Steam Input overriding controls is bad implementation.
I play with a Dualshock 4. I get that Steam is all about Steam Deck users, but QoL improvements for them shouldn't be a detriment to other players.

My games all worked great before the recent changes. Now I have to go disable Steam Input for every game so my PC doesn't think two input methods are okay (every button pressed is being input twice). I also get the wrong prompts in games that were fine before.

I hope this gets fixed by next Steam update.

Steam Input overstepping its boundaries has been a “feature” from Day 1 and a big part of why I hate it so much and wish it would go away.

I disagree. Before it I was constantly having to use JoyToKey or DS4Windows if XInput wasn't doing its job. Until the recent change, I've had few games where Steam Input was detrimental. And at least Steam offers controller support as opposed to Epic's and GoG's lack of controller features.

But I definitely agree in that it should not be overriding the controls developers already have in place. The latest implementation is way overstepping acceptable boundaries, including how the control input descriptions on every game's library page make it sound like it's the game's fault for bad controls and glyphs when in reality, the games were doing it fine until this newest implementation even existed.

It's always done this, that's why it sucks.

Is this why so many steam games are having trouble switching input from keyboard to controller lately?

It could be.

Strangely, the "feature" already seems to be pushed into the background. None of my games have the UI to switch it off right on their game page anymore. And they all seem to be back to default rather than Steam Input. Hopefully that means they realized the mistake and fixed it already.

You can always tinker with a game's controls in the Steam settings for the game and see if that's the problem.

Edit: Hmm... maybe it isn't corrected. I have a game clearly made for controllers that is saying the game wasn't made to support controls even though that's all I've ever played it with and it is clearly intended to be played with one. It is even Steam Deck compatible. They really need to get this nonsense under control.

I love that it overrides; I'm disabled and play games with my own custom gamepad key bindings so I can make an empty Steam Input profile and use other programs like AntimicroX to use my keybinds on top.

You necroed an old thread that is irrelevant to the current implementation. But yeah, it is good that it lets you customize controls for yourself. The problem here was Steam Input was on by default and developer controls were active at the same time as Steam Input causing two inputs each button press.

My comment was a reply to the first comment. Should've quoted that comment instead. Sorry for the necro and I hope you have a good day.
