How to fix the incorrect number of total playtime?
For example, it says to me that i have 505.3 hours on a game. But as soon as i launch that game, it reverts to 504.8 hours. And that happens every time i launch steam. Any fix?

It's prob a rounding error - and why is it so critical to you if I may ask?

Honestly, it hurts my eyes. I can live without it but i would prefer if there exists a fix

Oddly enough I totally get that.
Sadly your dealing with two different systems that don't agree.
I suggest reaching out to the devs of said game.

But this has only started happening 2 weeks ago. And the game in particular is Bully. There was no update for that game so it can't be devs screwing up. Does it have to do with steam going into maintenance or your internet cutting off suddenly?

There's no fix I believe, happened to me with Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Really annoys my OCD. I like to finish playing my games before I go above the rounder so I finish them at .1.2.3.4.5. That way the hours played on the game on my games list matches the rest of my profile.
that sucks

He doesn't even mention whether it's a game vs. Steam thing.

Either way, nothing can be done. Developers have no influence on how Steam measures the playtime, and more importantly, they can't track it either. There will always be a difference between the playtime measured by Steam and the gametime measured by the game.

I don't even know whether they could query Steams idea of the current playtime, to basically ditch their own measurement and just ask Steam for it. Yes, I can query Steam for this -- but my code is acting as a client, while games (to my knowledge) interface with some Steam library that interfaces with the client, instead of talking to Steam directly.

What else could it be?
Steam has its count.
The In-game clock has its count.

Not sure why you would even think of saying that.
And if the count changes on the client - well doesn't change much even then.
Still need to talk to the Devs.

Counter Strike 2:

In library: PLAY TIME 22.4 hours
In badges list: 21 hrs on record
In the store: 21.0 hrs on record
In the recent activity section: 21 hours on record (re-instaled it just to check)

The all games list is even funny:

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider 21.8 hours
Counter Strike 2: 22.4 hours
Of Orcs and Men: 19.5 hours

o.o yeah that's weird.
Def. a Rounding error of some kind.

Yeah, and if it's happening even in Valve games it might be something internal on Steam.

Valve still shows favoritism towards their own games when it comes to Steam, but for the most part it seems to be marketing-related, not technical. They probably let Steam do the playtime counting just like for every other game.
it is happening to me to I played a game I just bought for around 1.5hrs and Steam showing it 4.6hrs for some reason which is not possible I mean are they trying to extend the time so I don't ask for a refund or something I mean it is weird

The two standard assumptions would be
  • you might have used a free weekend before
  • you alt-tabbed out of it, instead of quitting it
this thread is confusing tf out of me. it's pretty old!

(context: the mods don't like necros so this will probably get locked to "prevent confusion")
(side note: not sure why I got a notification)
