Remotely turn on Steam PC from another Steam PC?
Hi,

I have 2 pcs. One is very old but still able to play a few games. This is my couch PC. I have another PC fairly new and able to play AAA games. This is my personal Work PC. Both have Steam installed. When I want to play AAA games, I manually turn on my Work PC then on my couch PC, the Steam will have an option to stream play these games.

Is there any way to remotely turn on my Work PC via Steam app from my couch PC?

EDIT: I am able to remotely turn on my Work pc if I use the Steam link app on my Android phone. I was hoping I could do the same via Steam app from my couch PC.

No - if it's off, how will it turn on via an app that needs to be running ?

Couldn't you do some combination of putting the work computer to sleep, and then use Wake on LAN (WoL) to power it up remotely? I suggest looking this feature up if your computers are on the same network.

Mind you, you should also let your work PC completely shut down from time to time as well, rather than solely relying on sleep mode, if you do go this route.

Maybe ask in the hardware subforum.

If the PC had an IPMI, then it would be possible, but that is usually only found in server hardware, for obvious reasons.

You can install TeamViewer on both systems. As long as they’re on the same LAN and not wireless teamviewer can handle sending the special packets to wake the other system. You don’t need TeamViewer to do this, it just does the technical part for you. Alternatively you can look up how WoL works and set it up yourself. It’s pretty simple really

You need to enable Wake on LAN in the BIOS in the PC you want to wake up. You can completely shut it down, it will wake up. (Just someone mentioned you need to put it to sleep, it is not necessary.) Based on this answer, you can see that PC can be woken up from full shutdown (S5 state): https://superuser.com/questions/71835/what-is-the-difference-between-these-four-sleep-states

Then on your work PC you need some software where you can specify your gaming PC's MAC address and then send magic packets.

For details, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN
