Windows 7 Alternatives
Linux Distro Recommendations (from my personal experience)
  • Linux Mint Cinnamon (new to Linux ecosystem, want a Win7-style interface, have a dedicated GPU)

  • Linux Mint xfce (low powered hardware, cheap laptops, no separate GPU, just about anything will run this)

  • Manjaro (only use if you are technically-proficient enough to self-diagnose and repair your own issues; based on Arch Linux)

Staying on Win7 Recommendations
  • Pale Moon browser if you need a modern updated/supported web browser (it has a lot of issues and the dev is a jerk but yeah there aren't many choices)

  • Firefox ESR (extended support release) browser which is an updated/patched version of Firefox (has telemetry and other stuff sent to Mozilla, only good if you hate Pale Moon entirely)

  • You want to stay on Win7 I'd recommend a clean install but you can still install manually. SP1 and SP2 updates, The crypto update for SHA-2 hash functions, and a few others (do a search for recommended updates)

  • You want to try updating to Win10 go get yourself an official ISO for 'Windows 10 Enterprise IoT Edition' which is the Enterprise 'internet of things' edition; works in trial mode but you have to put up with the watermark; there are ways to modify the registry to temporarily remove the watermark but it will return by itself if you ever logout or restart. Has none of the typical bloatware preinstalled but just to be safe use a good open-sourced debloater[github.com]. The reason you want Win10 Ent IoT is that it will be supported until 2032 with security updates unlike all the other editions.

Edit: I'm not gonna bother with the comments. If a Mod happens to see this please lock this thread as it has done what it needs to do. Kthx.

UpdatePack7 is a must for most Win7 users as it will take a basic SP1 install and update it with only one download (and a few reboots depending).

2024.4.10 was the last release.

Using this update my C:\Windows\winsxs folders are 9.5-10.5GB in size.

i know a pretty good one

it's called windows 10

good is an opinion and also as mentioned, its losing microsoft support in oct 2025, why on earth would someone hassle themselves moving from one OS without support, to another thats losing support, instead of going to something like win 11 or 12 beta that will be supported much much longer.

sounds like more work, for an OS that isnt even that good to begin with...

linux is not as user friendly as windows, it is more friendly
it doesn't support all games, it just supports more games than windows 7. new games run on linux, and don't run on windows 7
you don't need to "get wine or proton". you just click play on steam, and steam does everything for you.
people like you just have no idea what they are talking about, because to get any idea about it, you have to learn.

"support" is nonsense, win 7 plays all current games aside from specifics... linux has workarounds to get things working... and the list of playable games for linux compared to win 7 is tiny, try harder.

i use linux, have used it, currently have laptops with kali linux (formerly backtrack 5) installed on them as well, im not using linux as a daily driver, nuff said.
Fascinating story, I haven't seen someone with multiple laptops with kali linux and not usiny linux as daily driver.

If Windows 10 will have no reason to exist after 14 October 2025, what does that say about Windows 7 post 14 January 2020? ;)

been talking about my pile of old pc's and laptops for quite awhile, not sure what nonsense "stories" you are referring to but nice try with the slander i guess, but your misinformation isnt working quite well.

and for reference been talking about laptops with kali linux on them for years....

2016 was my first comment on kali linux and laptops... seems my "stories" arent changing like you would lead others to believe, so if you dont like me or have some personal vendetta, just block and ignore me, cause slandering and harassing me isnt going to do you any good.

You know I say windows 7 because it work and had great user interface... also it was last version that you can disable DWM without any problem

also great user interface I mean there is no annoying thing on taskbar like search , news WHAT?
a weird startmenu design with bunch of app that I never want to use
a setting that so bloat and broken if without DWM... also login screen....

disable DWM it because some people doesn't have actually good pc

You can remove bloat by using third party source... but why I have to do this??
windows 7 isn't that bloat that windows 10

What the... Ya, you can't disable DWM since Windows 8, because it does vastly different things than on Windows 7.

No idea why you'd have to disable it on any versions of Windows though, it's never been a high CPU process, nor high memory unless something was wrong with the users machine. Some browsers bugged out with it, like Chrome a few times and Firefox a few times, pushing GPU usage too high, but those were patched a decade ago.

In long term Linux is the only altearnative for the sane user who cares about privacy. Ofc most people does not care since 92% of them are watching porn on their clever phone which is a crystal clear security backdoor not to mention all the social media like F***book, Twi***r, you name it.

For the last 2 years I've jumped around a variety of Linux distros.

You have the option to install any of the stable releases and have little to no problems playing video games. Steam does a great job of keeping everything running well without outside interference.

Games outside of steam can be a little tricky (Genshin Impact, GOG games etc) but a quick search will help you find answers for your problems.

Personally I've tried Windows 11 once on my gaming PC but found it would hard crash while playing FFXIV after 30 minutes and I find myself back on Linux in no time.

I use Windows for my laptop and don't have issues but I'm certainly not alone in reporting the variety of bugs and issues 11 has.

10 still works fine and if you value your privacy you can always use programs such and O&O ShutUp10++ for W10Privacy to help clear up some of the violations M$ introduced a while ago.

Frankly I think you should try both and decide which you prefer, where your morals/beliefs stand and what works/doesn't. Make up your own mind and ignore the muppets who say M$ software is garbage and ignore the muppets who say Linux is complicated.

The windows 7 'alternatives are

Windows 10
Windows 11

Why anyone would want to send a bunch of technophobes to the most complicated user OS to exist, and oh yeah btw if you have an Nvidia card like literally 70% of Steam users, you're basically totally screwed too.

You might as well be trying to sell an Amish farmer the ISS space station.

Its irresponsible to 'recommend' Linux to anyone running Windows 7. Your self serving nonsense does no one any favors, least of all the people you are pretending to 'help'

Nop Linux wase a great choice in Dual Boot With Windows 7 x64 SP1

Microsoft calling they OS a securised OS but when you want calibrate that security you can't because all major gateway are HardCoded and obfuscated then that more easy to securisate yourself in a Linux System and responsivness are better on Linux than any other OS

Windows 7 x64 SP1 wase the best OS for Gaming, Add DX12 Ultimate + modernisation on that OS you optain the Ultimate Gaming OS Experiance trust me

Windows 10 and 11 have to much problem unsolved because the OS itself are made like this and to change that are not possible that the problem of Private Source OS

Anyway Windows 10 are good only for Xbox Game Pass and DirectX 12 but if you didn't like how Windows 10 work you can use Linux and Win7 in Dualboot or use a Powerfull Workstation to run Windows 7 in Linux and do what you want

Windows 7 isn't really an OS. All it is, is Windows Vista SP3. Google even tells you this. Microsoft repackaged it as an OS and people bought it.

Thing is, properly modernising Windows 7 gets you a sizable chunk of the way toward Windows 10/11, so what’s the point?
