Windows 7 Alternatives
Linux Distro Recommendations (from my personal experience)
  • Linux Mint Cinnamon (new to Linux ecosystem, want a Win7-style interface, have a dedicated GPU)

  • Linux Mint xfce (low powered hardware, cheap laptops, no separate GPU, just about anything will run this)

  • Manjaro (only use if you are technically-proficient enough to self-diagnose and repair your own issues; based on Arch Linux)

Staying on Win7 Recommendations
  • Pale Moon browser if you need a modern updated/supported web browser (it has a lot of issues and the dev is a jerk but yeah there aren't many choices)

  • Firefox ESR (extended support release) browser which is an updated/patched version of Firefox (has telemetry and other stuff sent to Mozilla, only good if you hate Pale Moon entirely)

  • You want to stay on Win7 I'd recommend a clean install but you can still install manually. SP1 and SP2 updates, The crypto update for SHA-2 hash functions, and a few others (do a search for recommended updates)

  • You want to try updating to Win10 go get yourself an official ISO for 'Windows 10 Enterprise IoT Edition' which is the Enterprise 'internet of things' edition; works in trial mode but you have to put up with the watermark; there are ways to modify the registry to temporarily remove the watermark but it will return by itself if you ever logout or restart. Has none of the typical bloatware preinstalled but just to be safe use a good open-sourced debloater[github.com]. The reason you want Win10 Ent IoT is that it will be supported until 2032 with security updates unlike all the other editions.

Edit: I'm not gonna bother with the comments. If a Mod happens to see this please lock this thread as it has done what it needs to do. Kthx.

UpdatePack7 is a must for most Win7 users as it will take a basic SP1 install and update it with only one download (and a few reboots depending).

2024.4.10 was the last release.

Using this update my C:\Windows\winsxs folders are 9.5-10.5GB in size.

Yes you just got it right there. You pointed it out yourself. Good job: We shall not MODIFY Windows to circumvent anything. What I suggested is NOT modifying anything at all. We just click the skip option during setup. The skip option during setup is provided by microsoft, in the windows installer, during setup. No modifying anything. Just click skip. Go install windows. As I tried to explain to you before: No outside modifications are being done at all that would make anything illegal or criminal. It's literally using a feature of Windows that is built in to windows. It's a part of the operating system added to it by microsoft.

You already admitted that you have never installed windows 10. Perhaps it might be a good idea to just stop talking about it as if you are knowledgeable on the subject when you have never used it.

You're kind of making a fool of yourself in public here with your comments.

Then open shutup 10 and click the switches to disable it again. It literally takes 60 seconds or less. It's completely trivial and not anything worth mentioning or discussing. Also updates aren't forced or mandatory with windows 10 either like some people led us to believe. We can disable automatic updating then manually switch on updates again to run them once a month or every other month then re-disable automatic updating again (and telemetry again) then wait and turn it on again next time.

OR if you want to have it all off forever you can completely disable updates and never update anything. It's not advisable but that is an option if you prefer that. If you turn off updates forever then telemetry will never be switched on again if that's what you really want.

NOPE! A criminal would be stealing something. As I already said (3 times): No theft is involved. It's literally a part of windows, built in to windows. Microsoft put it in to windows. They ALLOW us to do it as part of the operating system. The skip function is built in to the OS during setup. There used to be a "30 day limit" when we used Windows 7 without activating but with Windows 10 and Windows 11 they removed that and now they allow us to use it like that for a long time (many years in my experience). Anyone is welcome to do this with windows 10/11 and use it for free too. And doing so is NOT a criminal activity. It's just using a feature built in to windows. Remember: this is a feature that microsoft added to windows.

All "Spyware", data collection, data harvesting, telemetry, and ads in windows 10 can be completely disabled for free and quickly. That's been possible for many years now. That part of Windows 10 isn't even anything people should be discussing anymore because it can be disabled now. There's no need to mention it at all as it's trivial now to use it without that.

Still a criminal. Says in the EULA that you shall not modify the technical limitations of the software.

Find where I said I've NEVER used Windows 10 and come back.

Do you know how long it takes to disable telemetry on Linux? 0 seconds and therefore it's an improvement.

Baiting for clown awards on Steam doesn't work with me.

You said you haven't installed windows 10 before. Also: If you had installed windows 10 before then you would of known that what I spoke of was true and not argue it. You would of seen the "Skip" option for where we enter the cd key during setup and you wouldn't of written or said the things you did. Since you did write those things then you made it obvious that you have not actually installed windows 10.

I'm not trying to get "clown awards" or any other awards. I'm also not "Baiting" for anything either. I'm sharing factual information, attempting to dispel FALSE information, and trying to help people transition from windows 7 to windows 10 for free.

Cool, so you have failed to find where I have said it so I can dispel that as garbage.

Good day to you sir.

It's worth checking your installation is still working. I use ShutUp10 for my work computer and I routinely get the warning window saying that settings have been altered and I have the option to revert.

I'm also running 11 with some experimental updates to ensure when software has problems I can resolve them before my customers encounter the faulty updates.

This isn't the case for me. I have no reason to lie about this.

W10Privacy also has mild changes but won't notify you of these changes.
