Support for the Unsupported
This thread is for vocalizing wholesome and reasonable support for those continuing to use Windows 7 and 8 for Steam gaming. As of yesterday these operating systems became unsupported on Steam.

As so many topics rightly said: there are valid reasons for keeping Windows 7 and 8 for PC games. Certain old or niche games are incompatible or run badly on Win 10/11. Older PCs cannot run Win 10/11 so well. Some are opposed to the telemetry and data collection introduced with Win 10, or prefer the simpler, easy to use aspects of 7. No amount of 'lol just upgrade bro' invalidates these issues.

If you just remove the watermark, this won't change much.
Just a text string that won't show. And yes, this is easy.

However, you still don't get to be able to change desktop icons, for example.
To do that, Windows must be fully activated i.e. with a [/b/paid[/b] license key.

If what you did allows desktop icons personalization as well, you are doing something shady with the Windows 10 or 11 OS indeed. :)

Actually you can change the desktop icons and desktop image through the normal right-click interface. But we can edit the system registry entries that point to the desktop image and manually tell it to use a desktop image, even if windows 10/11 isn't activated. It's more of a chore and not easy but it is possible.

No actually I am helping everyone by telling them how to upgrade to windows 10/11 completely free, and doing my best to counter all the negative comments and false information posted from people like you that seem intent on trying to prevent me from helping people. My comment was not "Trolling" at all.

Yeah, they can illegally use Windows 10 with a watermark what they cannot permanently remove.

And there you go again with that false information yet again. Thankfully I'm here or people might actually believe you.

For the 20'th time: USING WINDOWS 10/11 WITHOUT ACTIVATING IT IS NOT ILLEGAL.

I really wish you could get that through your head and stop trying to mislead people.

Additionally we can remove the watermark. I already told you that's possible.

Anyone that is a home user at home can download the ISO, install it clean with a clean install, skip the cd key, and then use windows 10 or windows 11 for multiple years with no negative side effects. No worries of it being illegal (it's not illegal) and happily enjoy life forever without paying for windows.

How can you remove the watermark permanently?
Personally I'm not interested, because I'll stay on Win7.
I'm asking it because others might be interested in it. If you are not sharing it with the others then you are not helping just trolling. I don't think people want to use Win10 with a watermark.

I already answered that in this thread. Read previous messages. The answer is already written.

I did share it with others. I wrote in this thread how to go find how to do it. It appears you didn't read (or don't know how to read).

Keys from 3rd party vendors are pretty cheap. If ShutUp10 with all settings engaged (besides disabling the microphone, I can just turn it off) actually keeps all info from going to MS (who knows), I don't mind paying 20 some dollars to support their software development, and have a pro edition to boot.

None of the "solutions" I could find worked permanently (to remove the watermark). The only permanent solution was to actually activate Windows with a legit key. I'm telling this to those who are considering to upgrade to Windows 10. It will cost some, but if you want to be sure that the key is legit, buy from Microsoft only.

I will attempt a second time to explain this to you and I will use simple English words in the hope that you can understand it this time. Tutorials on how to permanently remove the watermark in Windows 10 and Windows 11 can be found if you:

SEARCH IN GOOGLE

Here. I will even do the google search for you since you seem unable to do it yourself: https://www.google.com/search?q=remove+watermark+in+windows+10+permanently

Yeah, I tried the registry-based one, and it doesn't remove the watermark pemanently.
https://gadgetstouse.com/blog/2020/12/10/remove-activate-windows-watermark-on-windows-10/

The second solution sucks as it terminates explorer.exe and it has side-effects. I didn't even try it because it is just an bad and annoying workaround (if it works at all).

The third solution doesn't even apply for our case.

There is no "Our Case" here. YOU are the one with the issues, not me and not anyone else in this thread. Only you. No one else in here cares. We're all happily using Windows 10 for free while you cry in a corner because you can't stand it that someone actually came up with a solution for win7 people to migrate to a newer OS for free so you have to attack that and try your best to make it sound unsavory to everyone in the hope that people won't follow me and enjoy using win10 for free. It's as if the very idea of anyone actually having a solution is offensive to you.

If everyone is using Windows 10 already then why are you suggesting to install and use Windows 10 unactivated with a watermark?

You knew the answer to that before you wrote it: Not everyone is using Windows 10 currently. Many people are still on Windows 7.

And you are suggesting them to use an unactivated Windows 10 with a watermark. Because despite you say the watermark can be removed via a registry hack, it's not necessarily true for all cases. For example it didn't work for me for more than a few hours. The other tricks are just temporary too. You need to activate Windows to get rid of that watermark permanently for sure.

And here I am just trying to put together an old computer as a project to use windows 95, maybe windows 98, so I can play all my old games from the 90s I have on disc without going through a bunch of BS trying to get them to work.
