Regarding the 20 year badge

So last year, a special badge was introduced for accounts that reached 20 years of service since it was the 20th anniversary of Steam. As far as I understood, it was meant to be a special version of the years of service badge (in the old Steam green theme), so users who reach 20 years of service later won't have that one, right?

If that's the case, how long now until we start to see what the "regular" version is? Or are there already accounts out there with a normal 20 year badge? Although I guess if it follows the pattern of the previous years of service badge, it will simply have the theme of the 19 years of service badge.

I still am but retail died, we had no choice if we wanted to play games..

Yeah I noticed, was asking the shop keepers where are all the damn PC games. It took me awhile to find out about steam. Had no idea it would end up being so huge and basically the future of PC gaming.

The people that have it, may not even be able to keep it. As in, next year on September the 12th when I get a 21-year-old badge, it isn't going to look like this one. Most likely.

So the 20-year badge, may not even be that special. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Oh right, haven't thought about it. They prob could just made an early adopter badge i suppose. To the early adopter belong the spoils after all.

I dont blame you. there werer server issues, and the network sucked. friends was completely broken for over a year.

it needed another year or two in the beta testing which started in late 2021, but rushed out less than two years later.. thankfully they waited until HL2 before implementing the store.

I used Steam in both the beta periods, and it honestly worked very well. The server issues only popped up as the load on them went up massively due to the influx of users from the full release. A longer beta period wouldn't have improved matters there.

Also, the ability to buy games from Steam came before HL2 came out. You could buy Counter-Strike: Condition Zero[web.archive.org] when it came out on Steam, for example. Although, the store in approximately the form we see it in today came later.

I'd like to see sources on this because there was only one beta phase.

Nope, there were two. I was there, and participated in both of them.

The second beta was much closer to what was finally released. At the end of that beta period, they wiped the account database: https://store.steampowered.com/oldnews/179

Accounts from September 10th were created with the hldsupdatetool, which was for downloading dedicated servers, and which was released earlier than the Steam client ( https://store.steampowered.com/oldnews/182 ) They're not 'beta accounts'.
