Sick of kill, maim, mutilate, jump, shot, bomb, hop, skip, and kick games.
There isn't a single game on Steam (or anywhere) that I can find that does:

1. Explore for the sake of exploring
2. Discover, identify, research, and use to create something that doesn't kill
3. Build but not consume everything in sight as an objective
4. Interaction that doesn't lead to war
5. Purpose to learn how to progress without killing someone/thing

I'm not necessarily a pacifist, but I'm just so sick of the same old, shoot and kill games ... even when I look for a resource based strategy game there is always the "kill" and build defenses element.

Are game designers really so unimaginative or is their design contoured by an unimaginative public/gamer/consumer? Surely some game designer has the guts to take a risk ... I can't believe I'm the only one that wants something more than shoot/kill to progress?

Yes I'm old, gaming back to text based Colossal Cave Adventure and Zork (look it up) before any sort of "graphics" were even a possibility and played on a University Computer in their lab. I've seen the game industry just follow the same game design pattern of shoot and kill and reward, add some better graphics, rinse and repeat ... over and over and over.

We can do better?

Where did I say not chop down trees or gather resources??

You implied it with this:

3. Build but not consume everything in sight as an objective

In order to build, you have to "consume" things in sight to get the materials.

First of all, if the profile picture is yours, you are not old at all. You're just a grown man and that's not a shame or a problem, it's a fact. I am 38 years old

Thanks for the compliment, but I'm 60 in my profile pic and yes it's pretty recent -- I do workout a lot at my gym and hike/bike.

Anyway, some great suggestions by most with a few peanut gallery comments as expected, but overall something I can check out.

I have looked into many of those listed, but there are a few that escaped me like:

Planet Crafter
Terra Nil
Against the Storm

Thanks for the suggestions.

I prefixed with the word "everything" (as in ALL resources).

product in development - not released and not completed soon.

Does it have something to do with Hobbits? A hint, more detail?

If you've really used Steam for as long as your badge suggests, you should know by now that you can literally tailor the Steam store to only show games that you are interested in and it's easy. It's just a question of ticking boxes of genres and details and genres that you're interested in. You can also hide things that you are not interested in.

Play Deus Ex games. Especially the last two games are designed for non lethal and completely stealth playthroughs.

You mean the first game ever where the point is to consume everything in sight?

Plenty of people play as vegetarian, either as a self-imposed challenge or just because.

OP, you should try Opus Magnum. It's only $10 right now.

I can only assume OP is too old to use the store search function properly, since the original premise is so entirely wrong

Yes, and in games, that would be "all" resources. You don't put resources in a game if they aren't being used for something. Now whether you choose to use all those resources is up to you and how you play the game, but it doesn't change the fact that your very post implied what the other poster was pointing out.

There are a lot of games without violence, even some popular ones (like Stardew Valley).

Stardew Valley is a bad example cause it has suprisingly quite a lot of combat and killing.

Mines , Skull Cavern , Volcano , Island / night enemies (latter can be disabled tho) and these combat areas have a lot of useful/necessary materials for "endgame".

And it's borderline impossible to mine/gather anything in these areas while getting spammed by enemies from every side.
Also certain enemies drop resources that you won't find anywhere else that are needed for your late game farms.
(Not to mention completing/clearing these areas is required for progress/completion.)

So no i don't think OP would like Stardew Valley.
