If you're worried about losing that desktop background put all that stuff on an external drive.
And, it may be better to just buy a second drive to "clean install" Windows 10 onto, and then copy what you need back over once you know its stable.

Or just disable updates and stick to current version https://windowsreport.com/disable-steam-automatic-updates/

that's a temporary bandaid

after a few weeks the servers will simply reject the connection from an outdated client

So your client turns into an offline client but you'll still be able to run your library for the most part. Especially older games and singleplayer games won't be affected.

yea but in that case you don't need to apply your workaround anyway

Going to play skyrim for the last time in online mode, not such a happy new year to lose steam on a working gaming rig, just because it's windows 7.

I have both because no matter how many times I look for it, update it, or download it, the codec for VLC refuses to play my blue ray DVDs, so I have to use their media player which does support blue rays for some reason. But VLC of all things, doesn't out the gate. I tried, I spent days trying to get that ♥♥♥♥ to work.

I suspect its either me, my system. or VLC, and trust me. I wana blame me over VLC.

VLC plays/decodes DVDs, not BlueRay. Thats an entirely different format.
To play BlueRay disks you'd need a BlueRay player drive. That usually comes with some Windows software, like CyberLink Media Suite or other free(but fully working) player software.
