There is 125 million Steam accounts, a whole lot more people know about Steam now. So they don't need to do things like that anymore.
People also complained about them which is another reason why they stopped doing them.
Some where notorious for causing bad stuff like the flash deals. Because it meant people waited to the last day before buying and that caused the store to crash.
The coal event was bad for those who where mass collecting coal but only getting one of 2 games.
We don't have to go back that far, we had events 3-4 years ago where Steam was already the king of digital game store. And I don't remember anyone complaining about these events
I'll give you a very recent example. Remember the NextFest badge that glitched? Quite a few users could not level the badge up completely. And guess what? There was huge uproar and also fun fact: Steam Support can't alter or fix badges.
Regarding Next Fest, I had no issues and got my badge. But I believe it wasn't Steam's fault rather the game developers on next fest. And yes, Steam can alter badges as we have seen people were exploiting badges and going above 20,000+ Steam level and Steam has reversed all of the badges of those people who exploited it. Unless it is Steam's fault/omission they will never add badge to your profile manually or try to fix it.
It's actual work to develop these things, and if it doesn't cause more sales...
Just think about it: how many games did you buy BECAUSE of the "Grand Prix"?
Actually it was poor coding on steams part. Some of the events were bugged which caused people to accidentally gain way more steam profile levels than was intended. It wasn't really users exploiting anything. They allowed us to keep our levels though.
I just wish they had kept the events and just made sure they were not buggy, instead of stopping them all together.
