Is it just me or do games SUCK in 2023 compared to a long while ago?
Honestly I think the last truly 'god tier' game I played was Halo 2 on original xbox.

Gaming since then has never been the same.

Games will usually get 90% of the way towards being a truly great game, then fail spectacularly in some hugely important area. Gaming sucks right now, IMO.

Im sure most of the problem is my desire to play very competitive games. Single player prob has some great games that never peak my interest because of how slow / easy / not competitive they are.

If only I had a connect in a AAA studio that wanted to help me make a truly god tier FPS game. I have such a great idea but in order to implement it Id basically have to learn how to make games from the ground up. S M H.

I see you are complaining about critical hit mechanics. And they exist both so that less skilled players always have a chance to get lucky and kill a far better player and because RNG leads people to make more risky plays when they feel they actually have a chance to pull something off instead of merely conceding. FPS games often have a mix of weapon types to cater to the needs of multiple kinds of players and excel at different map situations.

Just because you personally don't care for certain mechanics does not mean they were put in for no good reason. Some players really do prefer to gamble on aggressive plays while others would prefer fixed reliable damage. Go find a TF2 server modded to turn crits off with like minded people.
I hear you but in TF2 its the opposite.

Random crits help good players DECIMATE bad players because they actually ramp UP with damage dealt.

That bad player misses the crit anyway lol. The good player dumpsters 4 people with it.

My son was a rabid Xbox gamer. MP to the core. Came to me one day and said, "I want to learn how to make video games." So I handed him a thick manual on how to model in 3D.

Next day, he hands the manual back and says, "Never mind."

What did he decide to do instead?

The HD era was the tipping point for the industry. That’s when costs of making games started to balloon out of control. Previously you could have lots of mid-tier studios putting out oddball passion projects and occasionally get a surprise hit. And the quicker development cycle resulted in big studios pushing out games at a quicker pace, so if you got a turd one release, the next could be better.

Now, since games cost much more to make, the middle tier companies got ate up by the big studios, the pace of games released has slowed, and the focus has shifted from selling a complete game, to a continuous money stream to recoup costs.

The passion projects are now relegated to smaller titles because making anything too ambitious just would ruin smaller devs.

And there’s the fact that digital distribution has made it easy to “release” a game in beta and patch it later. Something taken advantage of easily.

And there’s absolutely a culture of consoomerism in gaming. Sure, you might see people mad about getting a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. But they’ll still buy everything from the micro transaction store, and of course preorder the next AAA disappointment unquestionably.

It doesn’t help that younger players have grown up in a world of smartphone games where behavior manipulation and micropayments are the norm. To anyone without the longer term perspective it always has been that way.

TRUE!!

Older games had so much heart.

Now its just COD 57: BATTLE ON MARS.. BECAUSE EARTH IS DESTROYED.

"Shovelware" lol.

Considering my Wishlist grew by three games today I think gaming's doing just fine. So long as one does not have tunnel vision.

Any competitive FPS recommendations?
I think every year there are games that are great and some that aren't. Problem is we don't always agree on which ones are great or not.

Going to be honest here ... I actually owned a copy of E.T. for Atari when I was a kid and could never figure out why I couldn't do anything. Come to find out years later it was because it wasn't made correctly. Picture perfect example of why some games weren't great back then, either.

I blew through a ton of quarters at the arcade when Gauntlet came out with another person and we found that the game got stuck at level 98 and we basically wasted quarters trying to get farther.

If I were asked when I thought gaming was at its peak I would say the PS1/PS2/Gamecube era. I highly doubt everyone else would agree with that and I don't blame them. They have a right to believe how they feel about gaming, too.

Look, if you find yourself floundering when it comes to gaming in 2023 it is either time for you to hang it up OR find a new reason to love gaming.

For me it is simple ... I can buy and play games here that were from back in the 2000's that I really loved and can play again. It doesn't bother me if there isn't a new game I want to buy because I can rely on those good old games that got me through.

Complaining about it may get it off my chest but it won't fix anything else. Personally if it were me I'd buy an older system and repurchase those older games that you can't get here or find other ways to play them.

I'd personally go broke if Steam really had some of the games I've been dying to play that I can't anymore (mostly because I can't afford to buy all the older games I want back). Here's a few I'd love to see here ...

Ar tonelico trilogy
Wild Arms 1-5
Shadow Hearts trilogy
Xenosaga trilogy

I could seriously go on for a lot longer but why bother? All I can do is hope and pray eventually someone says let's give the people want they want instead of what we want.

But what 'god tier' 100/100 quality 'perfect' games are there for competitive games?

I havent seen any recently.
Perfect games don't exist. They never have and they never will.

Your expectations are beyond unrealistic, so of course you will be disappointed by everything. Thing is, that is YOUR problem.
Cool.

When you arent a casual gamer you always hope that 9/10 game pulls its head out in that super important area and actually fixes their game and makes it 10/10 game.
Funny thing is, a game doesn't need to be 10/10 to be fun and entertaining. The only thing that matters is does is give me value for my money. 99% of the games in my library have, and continue to do so on a daily basis - some a heck of a lot more than others. But because I am a discerning consumer, the ones that ultimately disappoint or aren't my cup of tea are few and far between.

Games used to be passion projects, now they're just shovelware.
Funny story - I was able to buy shovelware in the 80's and 90's too. A lot of it. That's why 1983 happened.

I have been gaming for well over 40 years now. I watched and played as console and computer gaming were born, stumbled, and thrived. There were always passion projects, there were always money grabs, and there were always duds. I will still take today, right now, over any other period of time because literally at my fingertips are thousands of choices in games that I can make, and it would take me more lifetimes than I could wish to have to play all the games that would be worth the money to me.
you can find both good and and bad games each year, it's not just 2023.
idk had a blast with starfield and hitman3

Halo 1 and Halo 2 multiplayer were 'perfect' games.

Flawless. IMO.

Even down to the maps. Iconic.

youre so right about that era of games. That was mine, too.

Is gauntlet = gauntlet legends? We bought that for n64! I basically harassed my friend into buying it spending 20 mins explaining why he should get it (no way I would afford it). He loved it. Great game lol.
It's always the same fps crowd who complain abt this
Pleas go play a difficult singleplayer game. Saying that singleplayer games provide no challenge is just wrong. If you expand your horizons you will find some really fun titles imo, both old and new.

There are a million souls-likes ofc, and you can play Sekiro, any of the Dark Souls titles etc. I dont really know many FPS titles since that's not my preference, but I've enjoyed achievement hunting in DUSK, a really well made retro FPS. If you are open to different genres then you can also try They Are Billions, it's a base building RTS set in the zombie apocalypse.

As for competitive FPS, I really enjoyed The Finals, but the open beta for that has come to an end.

The AAA studios of old keep dropping the ball, sure, but there are 1000s of AA and indie studios, as well as larger new studios like Larian, putting out absolutely gorgeous games. Please try more games out in different genres, gaming has never been better imo
I always find something good to play.
Oh also Remnant 2! It's a challenging souls-like with shooting elements
While Stardew Valley isn't perfect, it's close to perfect.
