Random crits help good players DECIMATE bad players because they actually ramp UP with damage dealt.
That bad player misses the crit anyway lol. The good player dumpsters 4 people with it.
What did he decide to do instead?
TRUE!!
Older games had so much heart.
Now its just COD 57: BATTLE ON MARS.. BECAUSE EARTH IS DESTROYED.
"Shovelware" lol.
Any competitive FPS recommendations?
Going to be honest here ... I actually owned a copy of E.T. for Atari when I was a kid and could never figure out why I couldn't do anything. Come to find out years later it was because it wasn't made correctly. Picture perfect example of why some games weren't great back then, either.
I blew through a ton of quarters at the arcade when Gauntlet came out with another person and we found that the game got stuck at level 98 and we basically wasted quarters trying to get farther.
If I were asked when I thought gaming was at its peak I would say the PS1/PS2/Gamecube era. I highly doubt everyone else would agree with that and I don't blame them. They have a right to believe how they feel about gaming, too.
Look, if you find yourself floundering when it comes to gaming in 2023 it is either time for you to hang it up OR find a new reason to love gaming.
For me it is simple ... I can buy and play games here that were from back in the 2000's that I really loved and can play again. It doesn't bother me if there isn't a new game I want to buy because I can rely on those good old games that got me through.
Complaining about it may get it off my chest but it won't fix anything else. Personally if it were me I'd buy an older system and repurchase those older games that you can't get here or find other ways to play them.
I'd personally go broke if Steam really had some of the games I've been dying to play that I can't anymore (mostly because I can't afford to buy all the older games I want back). Here's a few I'd love to see here ...
Ar tonelico trilogy
Wild Arms 1-5
Shadow Hearts trilogy
Xenosaga trilogy
I could seriously go on for a lot longer but why bother? All I can do is hope and pray eventually someone says let's give the people want they want instead of what we want.
Funny thing is, a game doesn't need to be 10/10 to be fun and entertaining. The only thing that matters is does is give me value for my money. 99% of the games in my library have, and continue to do so on a daily basis - some a heck of a lot more than others. But because I am a discerning consumer, the ones that ultimately disappoint or aren't my cup of tea are few and far between.
Funny story - I was able to buy shovelware in the 80's and 90's too. A lot of it. That's why 1983 happened.
I have been gaming for well over 40 years now. I watched and played as console and computer gaming were born, stumbled, and thrived. There were always passion projects, there were always money grabs, and there were always duds. I will still take today, right now, over any other period of time because literally at my fingertips are thousands of choices in games that I can make, and it would take me more lifetimes than I could wish to have to play all the games that would be worth the money to me.
Halo 1 and Halo 2 multiplayer were 'perfect' games.
Flawless. IMO.
Even down to the maps. Iconic.
Is gauntlet = gauntlet legends? We bought that for n64! I basically harassed my friend into buying it spending 20 mins explaining why he should get it (no way I would afford it). He loved it. Great game lol.
There are a million souls-likes ofc, and you can play Sekiro, any of the Dark Souls titles etc. I dont really know many FPS titles since that's not my preference, but I've enjoyed achievement hunting in DUSK, a really well made retro FPS. If you are open to different genres then you can also try They Are Billions, it's a base building RTS set in the zombie apocalypse.
As for competitive FPS, I really enjoyed The Finals, but the open beta for that has come to an end.
The AAA studios of old keep dropping the ball, sure, but there are 1000s of AA and indie studios, as well as larger new studios like Larian, putting out absolutely gorgeous games. Please try more games out in different genres, gaming has never been better imo
