Why do my games update 3 times
I don't have the best computer or hardrive setup, but why are there so many steps that are seemingly reinstalling the game every update?

''300 mb update, > Installing 23 gb...'' What the hell?!
i never really closely checked what its doing, but i most definitely have the games installed, the updates are NOT that big, it mostly says something about ''installing, downloading, verifying,'' Verifying being the most annoying one, whats up with that?

Btw I recently found out im schizo-active so please don't call me a troll cause a lot of people think im trying to be one :KSad:

You load less than what gets changed.
The downside is, you write more than you load.

Are the update indicators even accurate then? because i joked about it on call but it actually happened: a 300mb update got turned into 27gb and :cozycastondeath:

download -> unpacking -> repacking -> validation

In the download window you see what you load, and right of it you see the amount of write.

So it could be you load 2gb, and while that it writes 32/34. What you load is the 2gb difference.

I think it started when games became bigger. If you look what many clients do while you load, they dont do what you like as well. Just loading.
Instead they calculate, use cpu, unpack the whole time.

it was always like that, it's not possible to patch a game otherwise

some time ago steam changed so it shows you what it does step by step, but that's how it always was

Its possible to delete the old part, and write the loaded in its place.

so you want every patch to weigh the size of the game? so every patch you gotta download 23gbs? might as well just reinstall the game every patch

Its a choice to make huge parts of a game "one file"

i think there should be a percentage for all 3/4 steps so we actually know when a game will be ready to play, but I don't think it works like that, not sure

No matter what you do, someone will complain. Back when there were no details "what is it doing, why is it taking so long?", now "why does my game keep getting installed with every patch?".

it's not, engines don't work that way

Then thats why it had to change when games became large.
