Just kill Windows support entirely; force people onto Linux
XP was the last good version of Windows.

Win7 was the last version that could be beaten into something tolerable if you knew which settings to fiddle with, what third-party software to install, and which Old Gods to sell your soul to.

I'm not here to beg for a continuation of Win7 support. Mozilla recently pulled the plug too, and Firefox version 115.4 ESR won't work with Facebook and Youtube forever, so Win7 is already dead regardless of what Valve does. And if we really think about it, the death of Win7 was never really a problem, just as the death of XP before it wasn't the real problem. The real problem is that each new version of Windows for the past 17 years has been worse than the last. If Windows 8, 10, and 11 weren't horrifying abominations straight from the pits of Hell, none of us would care about XP or 7. The real question is: what should Valve do about Windows constantly getting worse?

The answer, of course, is to terminate Windows support entirely, and force everyone onto Linux/SteamOS, until Microsoft pulls its head out of its arse and makes Windows good again. And if Microsoft ends up never doing that, and we just end up staying on Linux forever... would that really be such a bad thing?

Ain't happening.

You can't even play LOTS of games properly on Linux, btw. Plus it's just a ♥♥♥♥♥ to patch stuff and re-learn everything.

Rule of thumb: Windows for gaming, Linux for your everyday, average, crap i.e Youtube.

Instead of vaguely stating that Windows 8/10/11 are abominations, why don't you elaborate?
Is it the telemetry boogeyman?
Maybe the sense of superiority loud, Linux users typically have?
Linux are good for Potato PC.

I think we're slowly shifting to other OS, it might take awhile but yes.

Now if more developers made their games on Vulcan instead of DirectX...
You are right about windows XP and 7 being the golden windows operating systems. but "forcing" people onto linux is just retarded, you are braindead
No thank you. I want to play my games without endless days of OS frustrations.

Or, hear me out, we've matured over the decades and educated ourselves on how our operating system works and how to change things.

Simple really. Just because many users disagree with you, doesn't mean we're simping for corporations.

And you think 97% of users is worth losing?

They wouldn't be lost. They'd be forced to move to Linux, which is what we all should have done when Firefox terminated XP support in April of 2017

I have uninstalled FF around 14 years ago.

And why would someone care if they drop OS support......Old Linux Versions from 15 years ago are not supported by the current ff either.

And just so you know....a lot of software is not working on linux, the minority who wants to use it for playing can be ignored if other Mainstreamsoftware (or Hardware) can not be used anymore ;)
I'm not disagreeing that XP and 7 were very successful releases but forcing everyone into Linux regardless of their hardware configurations and software?
Its not like upgrading from 7 to 10. this is moving to a whole new platform which a lot of people might struggle with depending on their stuff.

"Just do a huge monumental shift of the entire PC gaming ecosystem."

This kind of reminds me of an old episode of Star Trek the Next Generation, where to solve a very complex problem of a moon falling into a planet, Q recommends that they just simply change the gravitational constant of the Universe so the moon is easier to move.

Which in fine for an omnipotent being like himself (well he was temporarily normal-potent), but not realistic for the regular cast members. Just like OP's idea is fine for his wild imagination, but not really realistic for Valve, or any single business.

Yeah, between the constant excuses for Valve and Microsoft on here, I doubt that very highly.
