9.999999/10 people who get "hacked" actually get socially engineered.

someone legit tried to "hack" my account once, and they even managed to compromise my email but then steam was like "wait, you're not from brazil?!" and blocked them out lol.

I assume how it happened was from a database leak from a random forum I signed up for at one point and used the same password... lesson learned to have levels of security and burner passwords for things that don't matter...
Hello

True and the most used is still email and far ahead every other. I still have recently recieved a mail from and ex working friend that have cancer and asked me to send her some cash ... funny i thought it was so old school methode that i couldn't resisted to ask the send of the mail where he found my mail adress and the link between us 2 xd
why is your "friend" asking you for cancer money by email tho? is this 1995?

Wrong.
Okay.....

You just won't be able to tamper with it directly or see it get used in such a way to make it look like its used.
In windows 7 we totally can modify the hosts file in notepad, enter anything we want and it will apply and we can see it getting used. It's just in windows 10 it seems our edits to it don't do anything.

On one side you said above that I was wrong, and that it does work (saying we could edit it ourselves) but then here in the same forum comment you're also saying we can't edit it ourselves.... well okay then.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say but your comment is very confusing and it seems like you're contradicting yourself in your own comment. Which is even more confusing as to why you would do that.
Hello

Nah, you need admin rights to overwrite this kind of file and i guess it's the same under w10+

Classic social engineering scenario.
You're Boss sends you an SMS to send payment or send password to a critical system.
What do you do?

A: Do what your boss tells you to do.
B: Call your boss and confirm
C: Do nothing

If you said A - you just cost your company a fortune and likely killed the business - never mind getting fired.

If you said C - someone else will get hit - and saying/doing nothing means failing to report a possible breech/threat.

B is the correct answer - even if its 3 AM in the morning.

"Trust - but verify"

This scenario has gotten so many big companies in a world of trouble.

Admin rights in Windows 7 was more of a joke really - UAC is a P I T A and very few people ever leave it on back then.

Very easy to defeat.

Which is why Microsoft changed things in Win 8 and forward.
And Security Suites generally lock the file via encryption or other.

depends on company policy... do what the boss says.

but we all know they all cut corners and then try to blame the little guy for it.

what blows my mind is how the nigerian prince scam still works on people >.<

tho it kinda makes sense since the CCP has cracked down on social media and I've actually been banned places for "Racism" for trying to tell people about the nigerian prince scam...

Nope.
Not anymore.

Social Engineering is a major threat.

I Gaurentee you - especially today - your Boss will not - cannot - get angry at you for confirming such a dangerous task.

If they do - then your boss needs to be fired or sent back to school to take lessons in social engineering security.

Because that kind of mindset of "blind trust" is why companies have lost millions if not billions.

LOL - nice call back.

Yeah UAC is...well its not what it was then.
The whole Account system in Windows is such a crock.

Linux at least is rational.
User Permissions - especially in AD context - is insanely convoluted.

An Admin Account even in Windows 10 and onwards is still not nearly "Root" enough if you get the expression.

More like your Bosses Bosses Bosses will give you a vacation for saving their tailfeathers lol.
And your Boss gets a bonus for having a good employee - etc.

I've had such greedy boss once, all office had to use pirated Windows and Adobe products. then when there's inspection for licensed software we would stick usb drives with Linux live CD and play pretend we're working :)

Sorry to say this but just let it go, it's the future, Windows 7 can't stay forever, everyone already switched to more modern operating systems like Windows 11 and that Linux based ChromeOS and the latest versions of MacOS.
