Need way to stop games from updating.
BG3 just updated to the new patch. I have mods enabled and the update broke my game. I thought I told the game to only update on launch but it updated any way while I was playing another game. In this day and age with games supporting modding, steam needs 2 things please. A better way to stop games from being updated. This is a must. Also an easier way to roll back to a previous version. I loaded the game and yep it is broken in the new version until my mods are updated. I want to go back to a previous version but the only convoluted way to do so involves redownloading the original version of the game and manually installing a previous update. That is over 100 gig of download.
Please, oh please make an easier way to roll back to a previous version of a game and make games launchable on previous versions without having to update.

The final solution is to fire the devs, yet still have enough support for account issues(no security patches since you fired the devs).

Steam provides ways to issue mod-friendly game updates. Some devs make use of them, most don't. Steam can provide branches that would allow a dev to push updates to a pre-live branch to give mod devs the ability to update their mods to these new versions of the game prior to the game's updates being pushed to the live branch. They can also use branches to offer different versions for the end user. It is extra work for the developer but it is possible.

Aside from that, if a developer pushes an update to their live branch, then Steam is obligated to push that update out to all of the end users. The developer is paying Steam, via the sales commission, to offer this service. For Steam to intervene and allow the end user to control this aspect of the service would cause developers to rethink releasing games on Steam.

Thanks for the informed response, though I am not happy about this. This prompted me to check Epic games to see how they deal with the same issue. They have a simple option to turn off auto-updates. Now I have a compelling reason to buy from their platform any game that I plan on modding in the future. Glad I bought Cyberpunk through them instead.

You understand that game devs/publishers do not update their games with modders in mind. Using mods is at your own risk. The modders are the ones who have to keep their mods up to date.

You can block updates. Something to do with "Manifest" files and setting them to "read only". Look it up.

I also had a forced update, last week, btw. Game was set to "Only update on launch" yet it ignored the command. Annoying af.

Your first problem was that you actually believed that changing your Steam Settings
would protect your Video Games from Updating... The second problem was actually
believing that Valve would allow you to use Steam without any Updates at all...

Go Offline & learn how to Modify the Steam Client...

You'll break the Rules of Steam, but at least
your Games & your money will be protected...

Or you can always just stay Offline forever, or quit Steam all together,
your choice...

There are no alternatives...

3rd party mods need to be compatible with the game version, not vice versa.

Larian BG3 Mod Information:

If you are having an issue trying to launch the game, or in game, you should remove any existing mod files, especially after a major game update.
