The funniest thing about this is that the skills they'll need to develop to keep Windows 7 running going forward are more or less the same as the ones you need to set up and maintain a Linux system.

It seems it is not the case anymore. Then just install Linux, haha.
Unless you have it on disk, it's days are number on Windows 7 btw ;)
Also, I can't speak for the Steam version, but the version of GTAV from Epic installs and runs on Linux just fine :P
This rig I'm posting from right now has Win 7, Win 11, and Linux Mint on it. (Mint being our household's daily driver for a few years now) Easy peasy.
So far steam is running fine on W7, but I won't risk buying games here for a while.
