Since when Steam started to erase halfway downloaded games?
Not even 1 day passed and halfway downloaded games go back to 0%. What the hell is this? Several years back none of this ♥♥♥♥ happened.

For me that never happened.

Did the game get an update released while you were downloading? That can cause downloads to reset to get the newest version. At least that got explained in another thread.

If you are on Beta, switch to Stable Steam. :)
If on Stable, switch to Beta!? :-D

Please tell me if that helps, or not.

I was actually asked about this the other day, someone had paused a game and had downloaded 27 GB, turned their PC off and went to bed. When they got up in the morning to resume the download it wasn't there, the 27 GB they had downloaded the night before had disappeared. Haven't a clue what had happened but this is twice I've heard this now in the last couple days.

That happens if a game gets an update or patch during the dowload time.
If you pause the download for whatever reason and then continue it, it automatically checks the currently downloaded files against the ones on the server.
The client then sees that a newer version of the game is available, deletes the partially downloaded files and starts from the beginning with the new files.
This has happened since Steam existed but its a rather rare case of bad luck.
You have to pause the game download AND the game needs to get an patch/update at the exact same time for this to happen.

Cheers I'll pass the information on to the person who it happened with, so they at least know what went off.

It has been a long time since I downloaded anything which took more than a few hours to download, so glad for decent internet.

Exactly what happens to me. Recent games that did this is Cyberpunk 2077, Remnant 2. I turned off PC for night time, only to wake up at the morning to see 0%.

Always did.

If an update is issued when the download is suspended then the whole game needs to be redownloaded from zero.

It happened to me a lot when i was with a 7 megabit network connection. A whole day downloading a game, then i turn off my system for the night and the day after *puff* all progress gone because the game was updated.

This is why it's advised to always download a game in one sit, without pausing, closing Steam or turn off the computer.

AGAIN... never, nerver turn off the PC when downloading a game, at least until your are positive the game will not be update in the meantime. Old games are usually safe, while newer or newly updated games are subjected to sudden updates.

Happened to me a couple times, usually when Windows has an update and I’m stupid enough to restart it at the moment.
kingjames488 Oct 29, 2023 @ 7:18pm
since they realised there was an issue where games would repeatedly reserve too much memory if left partially downloaded and then when later resumed would re-reserve more memory and continue on until steam was reserving like 200gb of my HD for nothing at all?

classic fix broken feature by removing it.

This explains the problem really well. It turns out those games Cyberpunk 2077 and Remnant 2 released few patches this week. Now I am going for a full download in one go 60gb+ without pausing or turning off computer. That's will take 2 days of not turning PC off with my 20mb internet

Idk how should I say this but I have been trying to download Enlisted from the past month but it literally gets deleted when I pause and turn off steam This is becoming really annoying

Then maybe DON'T DO IT? Also, ask in the game's own forum.
