For the future... It's hard to say. I am interested what the new ME will be and I'm open to try new things.
Kotor, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, NWN 1 and 2, Morrowind.
Future:
Hard to say, would like to see more games similar to Disco Elysium.
If I had to pick favorites, I would have to go with the classic Wizardry and Eye of the Beholder series. Those were my first CRPGs, and I still play them on occasion to this day.
My favorite of the more modern era would be the original Guild Wars trilogy. It came the closest to capturing what I liked about those classic games while opening a whole new level of gameplay and graphics. Next up would be SWTOR - before the craptasic expansions of KotFE and KotET.
Don't really know what's coming down the pike at this point with BG3 and Starfield now released.
Ideally, I would love to see the old Wizardry series brought into the modern era. Unfortunately, the IP holder is in Japan, so it's doubtful we'll ever get good Western releases under the name.
Yeah, if the OP solicited contemporary RPGs, that’d be my choice.
Larian for accomplishing something amazing on their own terms, stepping outside the corporate box as gamers and making a game for gamers while interacting with those gamers.
Bethesda on the other hand made something with immense potential but fumbled the ball in so many ways, it reeks of a game created by people wearing suits and ties for investors. It does a lot, and checks so many boxes - but those boxes have huge gaping holes, resulting in more of a reflection of what could/should have been.
And for the record I enjoy both of them, a lot. And both have seen some intense hatred in their respective forums.
added contemporary to the original post.
Starfield is an example of where I want to see CRPGs in the future. More simulation, more options, more mechanics. Stories you find rather than pushed.
Starfield is a poor example of this currently but there is hope for the future.
Anyone remember Borderlands 1? The weapons you used most increased your stats with them. That plus a skill tree like Starfield would be a blast.
Survival mechanics, way better AI, complex economic simulation. Shame Steam bans me so much.
I've played a lot of RPGs since then, and I find myself yearning for the flexibility and infinite possibilities of tabletop role playing, just without having to deal with other people.
So I picked up the Mythic GM Emulator[preview.drivethrurpg.com] and starting role playing some solo adventures that were created on the fly. I'm having a good time with it, but there's a reason computer games are a thing. I don't always want to futz about with stacks of paper all the time.
So I went looking for ways to better automate my solo role playing adventures. There's no shortage of virtual table tops out there, but none of them really scratch that itch I have. I want one that's offline and not browser based, has simple 2d tile-based maps that I can make very quickly on the fly, Allows me to store information basically anywhere, and allows me to automate as much as possible in a flexible way that doesn't tie me down to just one ruleset.
Believe it or not, right now RPG Maker comes the closest to what I'm looking for. Not for it's game making capabilities. Just the editor. I can throw down some quick tile-based maps. Plonk down some events to use as character and enemy tokens, which can be freely moved around on the map. I can even add notes via comment commands into each of these events to store information like character stats, inventory, descriptions, etc.
I would still like a purpose-built tool though.
I can't believe the double standard here. I accidental posted a .jpg to see if I could get my screenshots of Starfield here, and before I removed it I got banned.
I just use LLMs and some custom logic for my paper RPGs: D&D 5e, Travellers 2023, and the Witcher RPG.
