PSA for Windows 7 users

I'll try to keep this as succinct and respectful as possible. If I falter in that, please pardon me.

Windows 7 came out in 2009. 14 years and 5 days ago to be exact. I don't know about you guys, but I had a great time back in 2009. I was getting my associates degree, going to parties and clubs, making a ton of money. I bought a Cadillac in 2009, loved that car.

That being said, 2009 was quite some time ago. Many moons in the past. A lot has changed since then.

It's about to be the year 2024. We're living in the future now, apparently. And yet, there seems to be confusion here in the forums.

For example, there's a fair amount of people who seem to be under the impression that Valve made Windows 7 and is responsible for continuing to support it indefinitely.

So here's the facts of the matter:

Valve did not make Windows 7. Microsoft made Windows 7.

Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7 early 2020. Despite that, and surprisingly, Valve has continued to support Windows 7 systems for 3+ years after Microsoft, the company that made Windows 7, stopped supporting it. Valve didn't have to do that. They could have easily dropped support when Microsoft did.

This means that Valve is not responsible or obligated in any way to continue dealing with Windows 7 systems.

Valve has fairly generously provided Windows 7 users with a year long window to give them plenty of time to either "upgrade" to a more recent version of Windows or switch to Linux or whatever. Realistically, they didn't have to do that. They could have just waited until January 2024 and then hit you Windows 7 folks with a banner saying you won't have access, figure it out, etc. In hindsight that probably would have been better and would have avoided the hundred Windows 7 complaint threads.

When we signed up for Steam, we all agreed to keep our systems up to date and in line with what Steam supports. They told us in that agreement that we all agreed to that system requirements are subject to change. If you disagree with that now and don't want to change from Windows 7, then it would actually be you that isn't holding up your end of the deal, not Valve/Steam/Gabe Newell.

This decision cannot be appealed and isn't going to be reversed, just like it wasn't when Steam stopped supporting older versions of Windows.

No amount of spamming Windows 7 complaint threads is going to change that. No matter how many times you call out to "Mr Newell" and say his name over and over again in your posts and put a Steam emoticon next to it, he's not going to swoop in and save Windows 7 for you or build you a legacy client or a basically experimental version of Steam that will still run on Windows 7. That's pure delusion.

You not wanting to be inconvenienced and not wanting to have to spend some time on installing a new OS and reinstalling your programs and games and possibly getting a new PC is beyond irrelevant to Mr Newell, his company, and everyone else in the world that you hope will sympathize and commiserate with you.

You've had and still have plenty of time to acquire and get used to an OS that Steam supports going forward. If we could all be a little more rational and mature about things that we find displeasing or upsetting this forum would be a much better place.

Oh I understand perfectly. It's you that doesn't understand. If I see a game requires Windows 10 then I would wait until I had Windows 10 on my computer before trying to to play it. I wouldn't be trying to run it in Windows 7 and then crying in the forums that parts of the game doesn't work.

I would not bother with him mate, he made a threat against Kitty on post 240 and has so far displayed he's directly harassing her, going so far to track her comments and posting in topics she's posting. He's not here to contribute to the forums, he's simply here to stalk and harass other users for not agreeing with him

Yes I see you dont know what an Steam notification is, see that shiny green bell in the corner of your UI? if you click on it, you get told what has a...OMG A RESPONSE!? Here lets take it back a bit. You see back in day alot of websites made it easier for you to know when you have a response or text waiting by these really cool things called notifications, these notifications exist all over the place now.

Anyways back to the actual topic on hand. I personally would recommend users to try Aeroglass, it may not look best but it allows some people to upgrade to windows 10 and 11 while keeping the Windows 7 or 8.1 looks.

But in reality I think most people knew their time was up, this is less of a valiant last stand and more of them just protesting by rage posting mate so I don't think this was really needed OP.

clear your cache
reinstall

99% it is useless but there are thousands of tech support clerks who suggest it. they don't think out of the box, they just repeat what's being printed in instruction.

do you know why people enjoy Linux support more than M$? and it's when there's no support from Linux, we're on our own.
We help each other on forums, on reddit, youtube and elsewhere where user can post their question. we don't have system requirements for software or games (usually it is done by direct testing, the only requirements I've ever seen is shaders 5.0 but it's standard for all even old GPUs)
everything else is limited by raw power of your hardware.
game specs are useless to measure if game can run. specs is just a measurement of expected performance.
you might say it is different but no, it is not. Linux users reclaimed their freedom of choice and can benefit from it now. Windows users are pushed further down and you're just showing how rotten this pattern of restriction is.

people should drop Windows at once.
no more M$ clerks and their bossing around.
down with demands to upgrade.
install Linux and reclaim your freedom!

Some have invested so much into windows 7, I'm sorry but... its time to put it down. There is always the option to use a VM if you really need your windows 7 fix.. ya druggies. I jest.

You want a plank or etc then go with the Steam Deck or a Linux distribution on PC and you'll most likely never have to worry about this sort of situation again.

You were told in the agreement you agreed to when you made your Steam account that system requirements were subject to change. That's what's happening here. You agreed to keep your system in line with the operating systems that Steam supports, so Valve/Steam isn't on the hook for any wrongdoing here, despite what some seem to think.

Again, you've had and still have plenty of time to figure it out. Frankly, if finances are an issue then you probably need to reassess your priorities and put gaming on the back burner for now until you're in a more secure position. No one is stopping you or any of these other guys who go with the pauper excuse from going out into the world and making a few dollars.

It's wild to me that anyone would actually even use such an excuse and take the time to type out a long diatribe about it, it's like you're saying that you'd rather complain on a forum instead of improving your situation and that at no point in the last however many years did you bother to improve your situation. You'll find no sympathy or commiseration from me, we all have our own problems and crosses to bear and obligations. It is what it is buddy.

It seems plain that you are so used to fighting to get your point across about this that you so wildly misinterpreted the intent of this post. It is a shame, and perhaps I hadn't communicated it well enough. I was just mainly trying to give some perspective of a section of the user base, while still agreeing the facts were as you presented them.

I appreciate the suggestion that I should go out and earn more money, it would never have occurred to me. I should have realized that if it's not financially tenable for me to get new hardware I probably should give up gaming. Oops, I probably shouldn't be posting this either, I could be using this time to be a productive citizen instead of a leach on society. Oh well.

I hope that if you ever have something you need to read which is important to your life, you read it more carefully than you have here.
