If it's a legit trade then it'll stop being pending before too long.

It is something new Steam is doing. You should have a email about it.

Nothing you can do anyway.

Steam has some undisclosed algorithm to determine whether an item price is "unusual"; if that's the case, the money will be pending for a few days.

It's a safety precaution. Generally due to people getting their accounts hijacked via third party scam websites like the one you are currently advertising in your username. I would strongly advise avoiding any trading site as they are a sure way to having your account and inventory stolen, and also usually results in a VAC ban when the account is used to cheat.

You should start with this:
https://steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey
Revoke any key that shows up there.

If you already gave your login info away the 2fa will not save you. Best secure the account now.

Also go read the hacked/hijacked account threads about having 2fa enabled and it not stopping the scammers.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

What Callahan said. 2fa does nothing because they already have a backdoor set up into your account by you using their website. The first step is to remove any and all api keys, then change your password. And I can't stress this enough - never use a third party website related to Rust, CS:GO or TF2, 99.99% are scam sites that will hijack accounts.

You should also change your username so you are no longer advertising the site. Half of their success is because people are advertising their sites in their Steam names, giving them an illusion of legitimacy.

Phishing is the most likely cause, OP. When people get phished, they give out the account name, password and then active guard code. A bot quickly enters it and hijackers have access then. Ultimately 2FA is "just another code" that can be given away when getting phished. It's not a magical defense layer.

Have you secured your account? If not:
- Scan for malware. https://www.malwarebytes.com/
- Deauthorize all devices https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
- Change your password on a secure device.
- Generate new back up codes. https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
- Revoke the api key https://steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey

Cancel what exactly? A sale on the market? You can't do that.

Hm... except that I only ever see questions about the MONEY being "pending", never about the item. This is in contrast to the penalty where the entire transaction is "on hold" if you're using Steamguard instead of the app.

Support can. And if you tell them your account got hijacked while the funds are still pending they will.
The purchase price for this item is unusual. Funds received from this sale will be held temporarily.
Funds from this sale will be held by Steam for up to five days. In the meantime, the funds will be included in your pending wallet balance. In some situations, Steam Support may reverse the transaction and return the item to your Steam Inventory.

Pretty sure the item doesn't get held, only the money. Though I've only ever had a transaction go pending as a seller so I can't be sure what it's like as a buyer.

Will they duplicate the items or cancel the whole bunch of resulting market transactions thus creating a huge mess?

This just happened to me. I sold my Cs inventory wanting to do a Case opening. Amounting to roughly £220. Everything i sold was only a couple of pounds cheaper than going price to get an instant sale. (highest purchase order available) But every single thing that sold all the funds, have been put on hold for 1-2 days. I mean i get it for security reasons, but i have 2FA to confirm any market listings and the items weren't sold for suspicious amount. It seems ridiculous that i now cant do what i wanted to do, and instead have to wait this long. Like you're already taking your % from the final sale, yet i cant use my funds.

It could be that it depends on the buyer, not the seller - you don't need to confirm anything when buying items on the market. Just a thought.

EDIT:
Actually, I'm pretty sure now that it does depend on the buyer.
I sold a bunch of identical items (all for the same price) and only some of the money went to pending, all of it from the same buyer.
