Steam client web helper
The steam client web helper will not leave me alone. I try to end task using task manager and steam keeps reopening and then for good measure it’ll add in a few more steam client we helpers. I’m not sure why it’s doing this because steam isn’t even open! I have one game open which is starfield.

Delete Steam's web cache & restart Steam. See how that changes the situation.

A couple of things here: as of the June UI update, every user facing UI element in the Steam client is rendered using the Chromium Embedded Framework (it goes back further than this, but up until recently large chunks of the UI were still rendered in vgui). This is what the webhelpers are for. Unfortunately, there are issues relating to garbage collection and management in these webhelpers leading to situations where you have too many and/or they consume stupid amounts of memory.

The other thing is that, for the overwhelming majority of games purchased on Steam, the client needs to be running in order to satisfy the DRM requirements (to the point that if it’s not already running, the client will automatically launch before loading. There are bugs related to this too, but they’re not important righ now). If your copy of Starfield is from Steam, then Steam is almost certainly running in the background.

I just went to task manager and looked. I have had steam running for 10 hours so far today and I have started and closed games many times. So far my steam client only has 6 instances of steamwebhelper.exe even after all this time and all day using the steam client. What in the actual heck are you doing with steam to spawn that many webhelper processes? Are you using the web browser in the overlay as your primary web browser for looking at everything on the internet?
