Not only Windows 7, but Windows 8.1 support is also ending on Steam
Windows 8.1 is only a 10 years old operating system, and they are ending support for it also. Windows 10 is currently 8 years old, so should we expect Steam to stop supporting it after 2 years? Not a very smart business policy this IMO. Steam should uncouple with Chrome, which Steam says is the reason for stopping support for older windows versions. I think it is time to reconsider investing more in a Steam account as it looks like it'll go poof.

It has nothing with google chrome but with the framework chrome and many apps are built on called chromium. So to keep support you want them to rebuild entire system from scratch wich has a big risk of making it worse and also rework how the servers read data

"This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows." This is from Steam

It's not steam that ends support of older OS's but Microsoft and steam cannot stop them or keep support for them as we have seen for almost 20 years now.

It's more then just the chromium issue as security updates is the bigger issue here plus other features games require as time goes on that older OS's do not support like DirectX versions or drivers for newer hardware.

Windows 7 accounts for 1.28% of Steam users and Windows 8.1 is 0.31%. Microsoft has dropped support for both of these operating systems and given how low their market-share is Valve has absolutely zero reason to continue supporting them.

Yes and that embedded is called that way for most dont know what chromium is as chromium is getting a security update wich makes it not work on older versions of windows its dont have with the browser more with the enviroment it functions on. But have fun with gog offline installers becuse most other platforms also uses chromium

That's why I suggest Steam uncouple with Chrome and develop a standalone framework of their own. Consider that Steam store has games which are older than 30 years. So, it is only logical to expect them to support an operating system that is older than 10 years.

And what is the percentage of Win 10 users? Understand that win 10 support will also end after 2 years.

And almost everyone of those games runs fine on 10 but the reality is what its as the win 7 8 users are such large majority from what win 7 users tell me

Windows 10 is roughly 61%. 8.1 support is ending due to a limitation of chromium. I foresee Windows 10 being supported for several years after EoL like 7 was.

You have to understand Windows is built for compatibility in mind. I have yet to encounter a compatibility issue with my games on 10 or 11.

Those games will run. Heck, I run games on my Win10 system from the 80s and up. It's rare I run into games that don't actually work on Win10.

Microsoft will stop supporting Win10 late 2025, sure. But that doesn't mean Valve will. So far Valve has supported windows versions for a few years past the moment Microsoft dropped support. The same will happen to Win10. Taking that into account, it's likely in the area of 2028/2029 that support for Win10 will get dropped.

People seem to forget that this is the 4th time already that Valve is dropping support for older Windows versions. Heck, the first time was in 2007, 4 years after Steam came to be and 2 years after 3rd party titles entered the Steam store.

Windows 10 was launched in 2015, so 2025 will be the sunset for Win 10, and 61% of Steam users, hence my suggestion that Steam should seriously consider developing their own framework. Good luck telling 61% of your customer base to upgrade their operating system (which is a true hussle), or else... Steam are smart folks, and I bet they share my concern.

The question stands: What will happen when Steam supports supporting win 10 also in 2 years?
