Why do forums/hubs of 18+ games censor bad words?
For example, Witcher 3 and the Resident Evil hubs censor words like *bit* ending in *ch*. You can't say bad words in the comments/topics but you can show gore, decapitation, naked bodies in the screenshot and artwork sections?

How does that make any sense?

Short answer: It doesn't
Long answer: It is decision makers Pandering to thin skinned forum users who think with the part of the brain that controls emotion and are hard wired to always look at life thru emotion filtered goggles. In other words logic and reason are outside the scope of their world view.

The word filter has literally be in place since the start of this community and the OLD Forums. So this goes back about 20 years or so.

Valve just doesn't want people to use those words because it looks nicer on the forum.

If you want to swear like a teenager who just learned to use those words you can find other sites to do it on.

There is nothing wrong with using some swear words sometimes to express frustration about certain topic or situation happening in a game or something like that.
Also, you don't get to decide if people can participate in these hubs/forums. Even as an ex-moderator you still on your powertrip? Damn, that's sad.

Imagine being so obsessed with a retired volunteer mod that you take something that far out of context just to make yourself feel good.

Are you gonna participate in the discussion in topic or just vomit words about things you know nothing about?
Yet, he is completely right and you're completely wrong, both in behavior and logic.

I'm not deciding who gets to participate on these forums. I'm just giving a suggestion where if you want to use those words there are other places you can post on.
Quite a big difference.
Re-read Zefar's line as you don't seem to have done so. He gave a legit suggestion.

Riiight, thank you for revealing yourself as what kind of person you are. When you judge someone based on how many hours they play in a MMO (See how nonsensical this already is), it makes everyone in the room wonder why we should take what you say seriously.

You are not here to discuss your own topic. Not sure what can even be said, then. :ftired:

If the filters wouldn't be in place people would use them far more. Which would make this forum worse.
You can still use them and grown ups will know what words you use.

Curse words are often seen as taboo, but they can actually be used in a written form to clarify meaning, add emotion, and more efficiently and concisely express meaning.

Mark Twain once said that there are so few really descriptive words in the English language, that it is a shame to restrict the use of those few that there are. I agree with this sentiment. There are words that pack an emotional punch in just one word, rather than having to use a less emotional word. Using so-called "curse" words can save time, bandwidth, and, considering the limited writing skills many have in this day and age, can serve to more accurately make the point they are trying to make.

It is true that if there were no filters in place, people might use curse words more often. However, this does not mean that the forum would become worse as Zefar proposes. In fact, it could make the forum more expressive and engaging. Curse words can be used to add humor, to express anger or frustration, or to simply add emphasis. When used appropriately, they can make a piece of writing more powerful and memorable.

Of course, it is important to use curse words in a respectful way. They should not be used to insult or demean others. However, when used correctly, they can be a valuable tool for communication.

I do not believe that this forum is a terrible place to be, even with all the restrictions in place. However, I do believe that it would be a more expressive and engaging place if people were allowed to use curse words appropriately.

Um no, that would not be the case. People would use them because "If they are not filtered it's allowed to be used" and think they are freely allowed to insult people.

I've literally seen people claim that too btw. From ban messages.

Any forum that wants too have a proper discussion put up rules and what not.
This forum probably have a lot of kids too so that isn't helping the situation.

Let's be honest, cursing at each others just wouldn't do anything good. It would encourage people to be toxic to each others and forums already are toxic without cursing so imagine with. I know there are contexts but still... Steam does will to keep that barrier standing.

To Zefar and Seraphita:

It saddens me to admit that both of your opinions (which I interpret as - in general - due to the anonymity of the internet, many people are rude, mean and rotten ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (yeah I said it).

Daaaum! There's those stupid hearts again. Hey! Mommy and Daddy Steam. Go away. Yur no fun. :steammocking:

Rules will have no meaning at all to those types.

Solution: word redacted because of the rules ... 'em! . Ban 'em all and let GOD sort it out.

And with that? So long. Adios, au revoir. :steamhappy:

I can insult others with writing like this:

"you' are a bunch of slimey maggots whio deserve to eat rotten food for the rest of your Lifes"...

And I can emphasize something like this:

We had ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of fun"

and "sh1tl04ds" got immediatly censored... so I have to add that word...

and even after added that word it still gets censored.-.. wtf...

Disregard thge last one... I must have made a typo in the filter...

You keep saying this like hate speech is everywhere and Steam does nothing. I literally watched a user that equated LGBT to pedophiles get banned the other day.

Seems like posts like that tend to stick around for hours or days since the paid moderators took over.

The guy you marked as the correct as an idiot. The real answer is most likely that it was just easier to have the system apply to everything rather than to go and tweak it specifically to not filter on 18+ games.
