I'll game on what I already got now.
and software programs are always getting better with upgrades....
good on you for doing you
doing a clean install of 7 or newer DID NOT ask for a product key during install
you could freely get to the windows desktop and never activate a key just have watermarks on your screen but use the os completely free
xp however refused to install clean if you did not provide a product key
i know from 2 weeks ago i installed xp and 7 in my vms
Same, but some games are online and users can have investments in them, and some don't function without updates. A Legacy launcher from Valve would solve that, or at-least help with offline games.

Exactly my thoughts as well...as a Windows 7 user.
At some point, these upgrades and new systems are truly just scams forcing people to keep buying the next big new just to keep up in a vicious repeating cycle of corporate greed. The pushback recently is we've clearly reached a space where updating/grading is more redundant than productive value producing. At some point, a wheel can't really be made to operate better than it fundamentally already is, basically.
I have a lot of $ and time invested in my Steam Account using Windows 7. I was going to continue purchasing more games and gaming as I have been, but they want to end all that unless I "upgrade"...to what, exactly??? More "security" and "safety"??? Nice try. Steam just betrayed my trust in them and the investment I have made in them.
They could easily continue supporting Windows 7 in some form and it would only serve to strengthen the company.
The progress of technology marches on, and sometimes that means older technology needs to be left behind. The Gaming Industry and Gaming Community have been a driving force in that advancement in the PC space. One either continues to move along with the progress of technology, or one gets left behind.
