Epic Games is adding this feature...
Not sure if anyone has noticed but Steam should probably start considering the Epic Store as a serious competitor. The majority of my interest with Steam has been because of the achievements add that and the free games which are good free games.

What are your thoughts about this? I notice the only part that is missing from Epic Games is their community but I don't know if that's a bad thing.

There are several reasons why people hate EGS. Yes they give free games which is a good thing, and they take 12% instead of Steam's 30/25/20% cut based on how well games sell. Those are good, and if they worked around those incentives then I'd be fine with them. (although I'm finding out that their game giveaways may not be entirely good for the developers.)

But they shell out loads of cash to lock developers in to exclusive deals. It's hard to refuse an offer like that, and it takes away our freedom of choice, other than the choice to skip/wait. And it's not fair to the developers that don't want to limit themselves to 1 store, if they decline the money, EGS tells them to get lost.

And on top of all that, their portal is garbage. It lacks features, they've innovated nothing, they rely on bribes, deals, and strong-arming in order to bring in customers. Then there are several lesser reasons that people bring up, such as buggy platform, inconvenient, 40% owned by a Chinese company, and so on. But my personal biggest gripe is their attempts to buy loyalty instead of earning it.

This, if they didn't actively encourage developers to limit where we can buy our games from i'd have absolutely no issue. it's stuff like this which is why myself and others don't like them - https://www.pcgamesn.com/metro-exodus/metro-exodus-physical

Literally a game that was going to be on steam that they bribed the developer to pull and restrict where people could buy it from.

I don't 'hate' the EGS. I just find it s place I wouldn't put my money on.

Just like I thought of Stadia or did about Origin for many years.

And unlike with Orign, Epic still hasn't given me reasons to change my mind.

I don't "hate" them for either of those things.

I mildly dislike them for exclusives. And I've already got Steam, Ubisoft, Origin, and Battle . net (plus Playstation). . . I've got launcher/account fatigue - it'll take a lot more than some bribes to get me to make Yet Another Account that I don't want or need. /meh

Why does everything need to be a love/hate relationship?

I don't hate them. I take my free games, and that's it. I don't *need* them.

If they want to sell games to me, they have to do something. I don't know what that "something" could be, though -- I guess I'll find out when I buy a game from them.

Remember reading about devs stating that selling their game on Epic store is pretty much like a black hole, once you are off the front page your sales just drops hard.

epic is where games go to die

I collected those free games for fun for nearly 4 years. Ended with 250+ games at the end.
Never even installed the client. Mainly because 95% of those games i already owned on Steam and the rest just did not entice me enough.
At the end i asked them to delete my account at the end of last year, i would never use it anway.

I give them that account deletion is super easy on the EPIC STORE.
Just a button press in your profile and then you dont log in for 14 days.
And the account goes "poof".

Maybe a bit too easy that they dont want any proof of ownership at all to delete the account but oh well.

Well you need to be logged into the account in question but yeah, then its just a button press in your account settings. Then you get logged out automatically and as long as you dont log in again in 14 days the account gets deleted.
Did not ask me for anything apart from that.

So, 5% back of all your Epic purchases you can use back in the store (Still to know to which limits). The rewards expire after 25 months.

It makes me think why a store that gets 12% of sales in revenue is giving back almost half of it to try drive more sales. Their year of freebies is now almost five years long, half of their revenue share is being dumped back to customers to drive new sales...
It'll be a great business school case one day.

If this is about the 5% rewards, those are laughable.

First, the amount is a joke at scale. 5% of $60 is $3. To get back a usable $60, you'd have to spend $1200 in 25 months exclusively on EGS.

Second, there are stipulations. Publishers can opt-out of accepting the credit on purchases of their games.

This is a "glitter coat". It's a surface-level incentive meant to appear like a deal when it hardly has any impact and covers some other poor practice. I've seen it compared to credit card cashback deals, but those are hardly any better. At scale they provide a benefit, but they're still minor and are used to distract from exploitative interest rates that generate more that the 5% the company "lost".

To be fair, they're not doing anything new. Running your business at a loss until you drive out competition or aquire a critical mass of customers is a tactic old as dirt.
