Any racing games with "story" modes?
Part of why I love Gran Turismo is the campaign mode: you start off super amateur, slowly build up your collection of cars and licenses, take on events, invitationals, etc many of which lock you out of content if you fail or pick an event instead of another. It feels real good to play because it feels like you improve as a driver and it tells a story of some kind.

I haven't found any PC racing game to really replicate that. Can you suggest some? I'm looking for middle-of-the-road between arcade and simmy, or maybe slightly more simmy. Stuff like Forza, Gran Turismo, Dirt, Grid, F1 in handling, but it doesn't need to be one of those titles.

Perhaps:

Project CARS 2

But nothing will ever beat Gran Turismo campaign/career mode.

Grab a Playstation and get GT, closest to it is Forza.

Need for Speed Undercover, but I hear that game has trouble running these days.

GT3's was so good. I'm amazed not many other franchises have tried to ape what GT did with its career mode. I read they removed the career mode starting with Sport, and 7 doesn't have it from what I read. A real shame.

Need for Speed: High Stakes had a career mode, but it's a very old game.

Cars had to be bought and repaired after the race. There was even an entry fee for the races :summer2019flag:.

Basically any NFS game? Horizon also 'sorta' has one

Fun fact about recent NFS games. Because its built on the Frostbite engine, your car has an invisible gun attached to it. It has to because the engine requires all player entities to have a weapon, otherwise it cannot be controlled by the player. So every NFS game is like one step away from being a modern Fast and Furious game :P
