WTF?why stop supporting Windows 7?
I have many valid reasons for not wanting to upgrade to Win10.

For example, I have too many applications and games installed, it seems to be over 300~500, and if I were to upgrade to WIN10, there are too many programs that would need to be downloaded and installed, registered and configured again, which is quite a hassle and could take days.

And with my hardware running fine on WIN7 and games, there is no need to upgrade.

I have tried installing WIN10 as a second boot system and trying to use it, but it doesn't seem to fit my hardware, there is a noticeable reduction in performance on the same configuration, and I just play games, I don't need to upgrade for the sake of so-called security.

Forcing an upgrade would be like STEAM interrupting my game service, which is actually a violation of player rights, Keep at least one version for Win7 players that will be available for a long time and will not be upgraded, even if there is only a basic function to launch the game.

when I choose to continue using an outdated system it naturally means I can be held responsible for my choices, such as if the system is hacked or running a ransomware virus.

I don't know why, but there are quite a few people in the comments asking us to upgrade our systems in the name of caring about the security of our systems. Seriously, we don't care if our systems are secure enough, We just want to come home after a busy day and run STEAM to play our favourite games and get a bit of relaxation, that's all.

Maybe I have another reason, not every player is in a developed country, for developing countries it costs more extra money to upgrade computers and hardware (I know some people will say that upgrading win10 is free, but what about hardware? In fact the hardware of win7 has a performance reduction on win10), so why can no one understand that?

I saw that someone submitted feedback to STEAM customer service about this, and the official response was for players to come to this forum and voice their position, so maybe that's a good sign.

We need more support, so make your voice heard, please.

Sorry, my English is not good, so I use a DeepL translation tool to communicate.

And I dare say that at this point people who still use Windows 7 at this moment in time actually know what they are doing.
If you know that, you would upgrade for free to win 10, do some settings, because nothing bad will happen.

Telling people "no updates is fine" is a wrong suggestion. I would not use an outdated browser, and certainly not a whole os that was made by microsoft a long time ago. Rememeber how xp would get infected if you just let it sit, waiting for it to update over the internet after fresh install? Things like that.
I don't remember XP doing that. But I do remember Windows 2000 doing it! lol

(Though, in fairness I had left for Linux before Vista had been released)

I know such cases. They were "early adopters" of Windows 11 :) Basically agreeing to any update Microsoft shows them.

I haven't updated my version of Win 7 in years, never had a virus, never had anything stolen or hijacked. I use a firewall and 2FA on important accounts. "HACKERS WILL AUTOMATICALLY GET ON YOUR PC" is a myth spread by people who believe hackers to be omnipotent cyber magicians.
yeah, i use windows 7 since 2012/2013, no firewall, no uac, no anti-virus garbage. nothing at all. i always deactivate everything related to anti-virus. and in all these 10 years, i only had a virus once, it was ramsonware (yeah, it was a real pain in my ass), but as i said, i used my PC "relentlessly". you can only imagine how much "dangerous" sites i've acessed, and downloaded stuff and whatever. and in fact, i use windows 7 until today, since i hated windows 10 when it released, i tried it again some years later in the 21h2 and 22h2, i can't rememeber.
but i just didn't liked, but it was different with windows 11, i really liked, and i'm finally upgrading in some time. but still, i don't like the idea of windows 7 not being supported anymore, but it is in fact, very old. but it's not a virus catcher as most believe. and it's not strange at all not being supported anymore, windows xp isn't supported, vista isn't supported. that's just how progress works.

Nope. Sorry, but I think you are giving people WAY too much credit, and thinking that people know their OS top to bottom just becsuse they've been turning on their computer for 10 years - THAT is a "ridiculous way of thinking."

Think of all the non-technically inclined people that have bought a Windows 7 PC in the last 15 years, so they cam play games, browse the web, file their taxes online, chat with their frandkids on Facebook, whatever. They know Win7 works. They don't want to change, for any number of reasons, many such people have been posting on these topics about this issue. I believe they vastly outnumber the people who are tech-savvy and still use Win7 because they know how to manage it effectively.

You have one perspective. So it's easy to assume that something which seems sp obvious to you should be obvious to everyone else, but that's just not how the world works.

most of the people that i know, that know little to nothing about their computers, never turned off auto updates

they care very little about the system running it and just want to get access

when the switch to 10 came, i asked many of them if they had and how they liked it, if they said yes

again, most did not care.

i mean, at all

some understood a bit of it, but again, did not care

there were maybe a handful of us that stayed on 7

i only switched because i got caught by that x not closing the window crap microsoft pulled, but i still reverted because of how much i disliked it and only went back when there were games i wanted to play and needed it.

i kept it offline as much as possible

so, my experience is going to mirror eagle's, i think

it was only those of us who actually played under the hood that did not want to switch
Windows 10 did not auto-update, as far as I know. It prompted users, and they could decide if they wanted to update or not. And it has gotten so much bad press, deserved or not, that a lot of people did not want to switch - not because they knew the ins and outs of win7, but because they were afraid that if they updated then it would bog their computer, collect and send their info, wreck their games, look unfamiliar etc. I mean really, look at these several threads about its EoL and tell me I'm wrong.

People tend to fear change, and a lack of expertise will make them LESS willing to make a drastic change like that especially when they're told how bad the change is. And I was one of them. I knew enough about Win7 to stay relatively safe but other than that it's just the desktop I was familiar and comfortable with. I didn't want Win10, I heard the horror stories, but when games I wanted to play started requiring Win10, that's when I finally updated.

Soooooooo wrong. It even make me mad just reading you saying that.

Win 10 force you to update. If you don't your computer shut down. I've already mentioned this earlier in this thread. It still happen to me once every what... four months or so? On a constant basis.

The semblance of choice don't mean you actually have a choice.

so, the x not meaning x was documented and did upadate computers

and while going to ten did not auto engage, unless you go caught in it, those that i spoke of never thought twice about hitting

yes

when something like that popped up

the point being, they do not care about the os, at all

updating meant nothing to them and they did it without thought

the update to 10 was not forced, though

as far as i remember

except with that little stunt they pulled

there were prompts a plenty, but not forced to ten (happy to admit i am wrong, if that is the case)

I'm sorry, I now realise I must have misunderstood what was said in the previous message. I was talking about Windows 10 auto updates. I've personally have never undertook a single Windows "upgrade" ever. I usually wait and make the change when I get a new computer instead. Just make sense to have a computer made to run what's on it.

Well sorry for your anger issues, but I know for a fact that windows 7 does not automatically update to windows 10.

It's possible there's some setting people can enable an automatic update. I don't know. But it's absolutely, positively NOT a given, no matter how much you disagree or how mad you get. It baffles me how you would even suggest that, being somebody who is apparently quite familiar with WIn7.

I'm sure there are many people who don't care at all and will just update. The fact that >98% of Steam users are on Win 10 or higher is a testament to that. But there are still quite a few people who don't want to, for the reasons I've stated, and you can read their posts here in this forum. It's just as easy to click "decline" as it is to click "update."

But I know I'm right just as much as you know you are, and it's not really serving this topic to argue about it so maybe we should just agree to disagree?

Here are some of the questions posted in the past week or two on answers.microsoft.com and tagged with Windows 7. Each of these is the entire question exactly as posted by the user. I think this ought to debunk the claim that the only people still using 7 are super computer experts who know exactly what they're doing.

How to fix laptop when Windows 7 failing to recover?
On my windows 7 laptop when I turn it on it goes to the Windows Error Recovery screen. Both options start up options plus most of the options I tried on the F8 screen result in the computer going to the screen with the Microsoft logo and a loading bar for a 2-3 seconds before going to a black screen it eventually goes to a windows desktop background screen with only a cursor and nothing else. What is wrong and how can I fix this?

What could be the cause of system failure?
I was playing and in the middle of the game I felt that the pc was slow, then after ten minutes I heard the sound that my computer fan stopped working, the computer also turned off(i saw on monitor that pc turned off) and I saw on the computer case that the hdd light was off but the case was still running. to fix this situation, I pressed the shutter button of the case completely from the back of the case, the computer turned off completely and turned it on again and returned to normal mode, what could be the cause of this situation? graphic card? Windows? hardware? Could it be that the inside of the case is covered with dust and the case does not work well? Because I haven't cleaned the inside of the case for about ten years, and, this was also happened few years ago and i was changed windows and this issue was fixed but tonight this happened again after 2 years

It technically, publicly wasn't.

Microsoft just had a (quote-unquote) series of unfortunate events.
Where some users got bitten by an accidental bug that didn't show them the nagware prompt they incorporated into Windows 7 and 8 at all but just acted as if they had already accepted the update and started installing it.
And where later on there was this pesky unexplained problem where some versions of the nag prompt for unexplained reasons sometimes the top right [x] meant 'close and update' instead of the usual 'close and cancel' - and some users through no-one's fault but their own lacked the common clairvoyance and omniscience to be aware of this simple fact.

Perfectly innocent mistakes, of course. /s

(Except they actually got sued over it by one or two consumers and were forced to eat crow and pay reparations to them.)

In short: a lot more people would've been a lot more willing to give Windows 10 an honest look initially, if Microsoft would've been actually honest about things. They kind of poisoned their own well.

Technically neither RasaNova or KalCuey right nor wrong.

Did Windows 10 force people to update? No, I postponed the update numerous times until I was convinced Win10 was finally stable. I told the update popup to screw off and never saw it again. Same with 11.

However, did the banner popping up on repeat make some people upgrade before they were ready? Well, yes, that was its purpose. Microsoft made no secret of the fact that they thought WAY too many people had stuck to XP when they should've been on Vista, 7 or 8.

(Just so we're clear, it is always better for less experienced users to be on the most current and up-to-date OS. It makes life way easier for them when they require help. "Less knowledge" users get very upset on IT calls when staff refer to stuff they don't see on the screen because they're looking at an older UI. Soooo much yelling...)
