deprecation announcement under Windows 7
Valve plans to stop supporting the Steam client for Windows 7. When we bought games in this client, there was no talk of ending support for the client in Windows 7. That is why we paid our money. No one would invest money knowing that at any moment what is paid for can stop working. Many of these games are old, unmodified, and work great and will run under Windows 7. It's not up to the game vendor to tell us which OS we should be running. His business is to provide work on the OS on which we want to work. Especially when the games were bought on this wasp.

In this regard, I suggest everyone write a request to Steam technical support demanding either to ensure that the client works forever in Windows 7 (which is extremely easy to do, since you don’t need to do anything at all for this), or to return all the funds that were paid on Steam, including purchased games, in-app purchases, and unspent money held in your Steam account.

At the conclusion of the agreement, Valve committed itself to ensure that it works on Windows 7, on which the games were purchased and the client was installed. And we did not agree to renounce this obligation.

It also seems OP never actually read the SSA. You agreed to possible changing system requirements for the launcher.

This song and dance has been a few times now, first with the stopping of support of Win 2000 and later on with the dropping of support for Win XP/Vista. There is no point in bothering Support, they'll just disregard those tickets.

While such things suck, they're simply part of how software and licensing works.

And the majority wants Win10 since it's the most used one. Your point?)

there is no reason for even the newest games not to work under Windows 7 except for artificial restrictions.

Yep, we're still getting PS4 ports on Unreal Engine 4 or worse - Switch ports on Unity and it's totally fine but somehow wanting that ancient 2013 technology to run on Windows 7 is evil and bad.

I will keep my W7 and once it's mandatory to use W10 for Steam I will use a dual boot for W10 only for steam and it's games.

Well, sorry but it's quite obvious it would happen someday, as with all operational systems. It's the kind of thing that is highly predictable. W11 will become obsolete one day too, and not only Steam but various other softwares will be incompatible with it. It is what it is.

Yes, but stopping support doesn't mean that steam's client won't work for windows 7. Microsoft is stopping their support of their own product. If you get Microsoft to continue supporting Windows 7 Steam will to.

When I bought VHS tapes no one told me that VHS would be unsupported in teh future, doesn't mean you still can't use them. Not supporting something doesn't mean you can't use it, nor does it mean your games won't work. Most games will run fine in Windows 10.

Prototype 2, PURE, many 90s and early 00s games.

Looks like people are running Prototype 2 for instance on Windows 10 with no issues. A game not running is very rare. I still play the original Dungeon Siege on windows 10 for instance.

You really just compared physical VHS tapes to digital DRMed content?

Nope, compared VHS players to an OS. Have fun finding a VHS player these days, getting harder and harder because no one makes them anymore, same way people stop supporting the older OS's.

The DRM content is not at issue, its the OS that the steam software runs on as the overwhelming majority of games that work on Windows 7 will work on windows 10.

Steam has previously dropped support for: Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista, and several versions of macOS. Dropping support for Windows 7 is not by any means an unprecedented thing to do.

Literally spent weeks trying to find a VCR for a video project that wasn't over $100.

and then you would end up booting into Win10 99% of the time anyway as you probably wouldn't be able to tell if something has changed after a while.
Went through this rabbit hole myself once Win7 went EoL in 2020.
