why would only people who like win 7 use the new steamOS?
but also, updating or fresh install of win 10/11/12, linux, steamOS, ect.... is all the same, so if they are actually "diehard" win 7 users, then they likely wont change from win 7.
that being said, i have my fully updated win 7 pro install, along with a fully updated win 11 pro install on my main pc, but i wouldnt mind trying the new steamOS, when ever they decide its ready (dont want to try other random internet versions of the new steamOS), on my main pc or any of the various old/older laptops/desktops to see how they run and game.
Mod managers like Vortex, even NMM before that, allow you to save the list of mods you are using. I tell you this cause I also lost my Skyrim mods like that some time ago. Copy the list and send the file on your mail and you won't lose any mods list anymore.
Plus, your New Vegas mods may not be lost: did you use Nexus site? Cause all your download history is still there if you remember your old account.
I think this point have allready been discussed in some closed thread about the end of support of windows 7/8.
To sumurise you ,here what we know ;
- as soon as steam will use cef v109+ it won't work anymore on windows 7.
Here i see many possibilities and effects.i will try to give you a clearly view of them.
If the client have the possibility by itself during the update process to not update itself when windows 7/8 is detected so you will be more or less safe for a certain time, how long no clue and no one here knows the correct answer and that with the condition that logging with your windows 7/8 under your account is still allowed for those os..
If the client will update and make it unusable under windows 7/8 then it's game over because you have on your hdd a steam client that can't be run on windows 7/8.And downloading a new steamsetup.exe won't change anything because it's just a nis installer wilth the steamservice and the bootstrapp that will download the last client available on the cdn.
To counter that ,you have some option :
Making a steam.cfg that will forbid steam to apply on itself any new update but it still need to be allowed to connect to your steam account using your client under windows 7/8.
It's not perfect because with time , some client part will cease working as the new functions will be used under the new steam client.
A guide that allready cover those part exist ( steam.cfg and how to download an old steam release )
-as soon as steam decide to revoque windows 7/8 log in account.
Yes steam know exactly on what os is running it client and it's easy to just use a script on the backend side to disallow all windows 7/8 to log in on their steam account even if the steam client does not use cef v109+
So here there is no other possibility than upgrading to a system allowed to log in to your steam account ( linux, w11,w12 ) or putting your steam on offline mode ,after that and only game locally on your hdd will work.

This does vary from distro to distro. One of the reasons I quit using elementaryOS was because of the lack of an officially supported in-place upgrade mechanism. There’s also the thorny issue of some of the absolute worst distros (Arch, Debian, Gentoo, etc) being the best at this one thing…
Hope ya didn't pay a lot for those courses.
Linux though also depreciates it's older versions with newer revisions, quite a lot actually.
So they don't have to worry about migrating away from Windows 7 on their PC and can continue to access and play their Steam games?
Which isn't to say they won't try to do a subscription model at some point... They might, but hopefully when they do there will be more/better alternatives.
I don't even see Windows 10 as a necessity. Win 7 already was a 64 bit system. What did they add in Win 10 that makes it a genuinely better OS? It's all just bloat and spyware, nothing that actually makes your system operate better.
I mean, the list is actually quite vast on why 10 and 11 are superior. Actual facts instead of conspiracy posts like yours.
Fun fact though, Windows 7 was hated as the most bloated Windows to ever exist when it launched. And it was, massive compared to XP since most missed Vista due to the higher requirements. Oh, another fun fact, Windows 7 is just Vista SP3 at launch.
Take what you will from facts, prefer them over such silly claims such as yours though.
You forgot to mention a big one for gaming specifically, DX12/Vulkan support.
Every single new release this year and last year has worked the day of or within like 3 days release. Including every big N title i backup to play on PC. Everything just works with Proton-GE.
The ONLY thing is that VR support gets borked every once and awhile for linux.
Ubuntu LTS is the easiest and most stable to use and works perfect for gaming but its not the absolute best for gaming, the best right now would be KDE Manjaro(easy, less stable) or Arch(too hard for newcomers).
You need one of the latter 2 for the most latest libraries for VR support.
Fortnite, R6 seige, and warzone. Idk that they still do but idc to play them anyways.
