My solution for 2024 windows 7 support- A VIRTUAL MACHINE INSTALLATION
If Steam refuses to work on windows 7 I'll simply run windows 10 or 11 in a virtual box and link the steam installation from the virtual box to my Windows 7 install.
No need to cry about it and throw a fit. The argument many windows 7 users have is their PC does everything they want fine, and they like 7.

Windows 7 has been a great unobtrusive OS and I plan to continue using it until Microsoft stops re skinning it and calling it 8-10-11-12 or whatever new OS number they want to staple to it.
Literally the only program I use that has "dropped" windows 7 has been Quickbooks and I simply run that in a VM. The same will work for Steam.
Not worried about any performance impacts. I've tested this before when windows 10 was new and this machine has plenty of power and resources headroom to make any changes not worth the effort.
The Red warning banner is offensive. I'll find a way to remove that and continue on as I have been.

yep i got win10 on my main rig with 3 vms of win7 winxp and win98

pretty svelt if u ask me
Hyper-v or third party? The one thing I didn't like about 10 was incorporating Hyper-V which doesn't support guest systems earlier than XP, as I recall.

He did mention somewhere else VMWare which officially supports to some degree all the way back to Windows 95.

I'm curious as to how you intend to do that and prevent the Windows 7 install from dialling home. Because as soon as it dials home after the EOL date, it's going to forcefully upgrade you to an install that won't function. For that matter, how will you use a Win 10 install to run games on Win 7 which Steam would consider to be a different PC?

It sounds to me like you're making a lot of extra effort for yourself when you could just run Windows 10.

Just remind yourself not to bother trying to sue Steam as soon as your online transactions are taken over.
Visa, Wal-Mart, Social Security, and other large corporations/government agencies have leaked far more of your personal and financial information than your desktop PC is ever likely to. And no upgrade is going to protect you from installed backdoors in your network hardware, cpu, or motherboard firmware, much less ransomware attacks. Unless you are computer illiterate, the chance that use of an old OS will be the reason your info got stolen is nil.

The thing is, there are other ways to cause harm on EOL systems other than just stealing personal info. And that harm affects far more people than just the one who refuses to upgrade.

My motherboard Gigabyte Z77-D3H isnt compatible with Win 10. I installed Win 10 several times but my whole system was freezing suddenly especially when multitasking and after restart it was unable to boot; while on Win 7 it works like a charm. I found your solution very useful and I m eager to see if my system can run Win 10 through a VM.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter if you use a virtual machine or a real computer: After September 2024 Windows 7 will be completely unsafe / a security risk to allow it to connect to the internet for any reason. Running in a VM won't change this. You can not postpone the inevitable. At some point in time Windows 7 will become completely unsafe to use on the internet entirely. It's already happened to Windows XP and Windows Vista. It's almost there for Windows 7 too.

Meanwhile I just used a cut down version of Windows 11 that keeps only the bare minimum. So far, it works like a charm.

Way to not read the post you replied to. That's already the workaround to ensure you don't get the problem you just stated.

Not to mention the fact that hundred of users have posted workarounds for this directly in Win7 since the whole shabang debate started.

Well, you decide for a paid closed source OS, which is supplied with updates for a certain time. Then it gets a new name in the meantime (7,8,8.1,10,11).

How many hours of work do you demand from the measly contribution MS has from you? How many resources do you think are wasted on something like this?

Instead of switching to a free opensource OS in the long run. Do you make one on "stinginess is cool and if my end devices are infected and possibly end up in a botnet and help to cause damage in the millions. I don't care... free upgrade is out of the question, that's something of impertinence *cry cry cry cry*"

It's nice that insurance companies are now changing in the technology sector and it's no longer insurable. People like you are helping with this damage. People like you should be sued for damages!

How can you be so proud to be such a POS.

So the user necroed the thread to promote misinformation? I was already on 10 before I retired my Z77 board.

Maybe just needs help.
Another recommendation, sometimes it helps to install the os fresh. So after 10 was associated with the hardware already, i would try that. Best with another hard drive, to have the old install just in case. No loss possible when trying.

Why should I do that? I already own Win 10. These drivers look more like beta than finished product plus there are no drivers for all the components. I found on google that other Z77 users have similar issues and someone claimed that Gigabyte support told him that this motherboard wasnt made for Win 10.
