They already dropped support for XP and Vista years ago.

Time to move on.

There will be many haters here, honestly I am selling all my steam inventory and all my games and moving to another platform. Steam is in bed with Microsoft and refuses to archive older Steam copies. There are no reasons why they could not have supported XP, Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1. It is a marketing tool the elite use to maximize their profits and enable more control over the PC users. Windows 10 and 11 is loaded with spyware, telemetry or surveillance tools. Not only that, you do not have control over your updates any more in those versions which is very counter intuitive with gaming. Nothing more irritating than losing FPS because it decided it is downloading updates while gaming, or forcing you to restart your computer (Hello old days of Windows 95/98 with reboots after installation of everything). I am sick and tired of Microsoft and Steam and the Steam Guard, difficulty with trading, uncontrolled updates which kill game plugins and constant issues with inventory and losing connection with steam, I do not understand why the game needs to run on your computer any more because it is so heavily reliant on the internet to operate. No more days of being able to play a single player game without logging into Steam.

Any haters who decide to use the excuse (Older operating systems are not secure) or (Newest is best), YOU ARE BRAINWASHED.

Big changes on the horizon, and this gaming platform better choose what side they are on if they are going to survive the storm. I for one will no longer endorse them. I'll read a book or download a "Offline" game with TCP support for decentralized private gaming. These corporate tryhards monopolized the gaming platform and you gamers bent over and keep taking it. You are all a bunch of suckers.
There isn't a single distribution platform that supports older operating systems, not even GoG.

There's no profits in updating your operating system for Steam, GoG, Epic etc. It is about security and features though.
well if you can't updagre to windows 10 there is always linux ? :winter2019sadsnowman:

there has to be a decent Linux distro you could find that is easy to install , would still support your hardware and run most of your Steam games with proton.

I'm not a linux fan , I don't like Linux much but it is still an altenative that exist and should be considered in case like this.

Its really hard to sympathize with your point of view when you refer anybody who disagrees with you as haters, suckers and brainwashed.

You do have options, whether you like them or not. Either upgrade or move to console.

It looks like you are "brainwashed". Take a look here and understand:

https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/

Microsoft Windows 10 users share 74%, while W11 users share 22.5%. This makes a total of about 95% of Windows users on Steam. And additionally but just 1% use Windows 7 64-bit.

https://help.steampowered.com/faqs/view/4784-4F2B-1321-800A
This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

They even state "Google Chrome" in general which hasn't anything to do with Microsoft, but well.. Windows is the most used OS worldwide.

Steam is not "in bed" with Microsoft, nor do they act together, but Steam "has to REACT"!!

Why would Steam like to run on "outdated", "obsolete" and so on "unsupported" and "insecure" devices..?! Steam also needs to go with time, also for latest state-of-the-art standards and security implementations.

It is also due to law policy, think about it, so Steam cannot be sued in a way whenever there is a "security breach" or whatever.

Install Windows 2000, my friend, we been there before as well..:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_(service)

Steam also stops support for old MacOS etc..
https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/0972-74BD-D8DE-662E

In this case there is no "conspiracy" happening.. but we need to go with time.

Ever heard about Quantum Computers? To exaggerate "a bit", these computers can crack 1 billion passwords within a second. Whenever this releases, EVERYONE has to REACT on that..

This will be a heaven for China, Russia, and other communist states.. as well as for democratic and semi-/pseudo-democratic states..

You simply dont see the whole, the forest in front of trees..

W10 is a performance mess and W11 is a buggy and a thrown together crap as heck.. but supports a better gaming experience and performance than W10 does. Before W11, W10 was a thrown together mess..

Well:

Opt-in to the "Windows Insider" program to download and install Windows 12 Beta "later this year". A highly unstable (pre-)alpha version of Windows 12 is already available there in a brand new Dev channel branch called Canary[blogs.windows.com].

W12 will have a greatly improved backwards compatibility implemented to run even older applications and software. Windows 12 official release is somewhere next year in 2024.

  • Windows 12 will include ChatGPT, as Microsoft are the owners of ChatGPT..

  • More and enhanced security..

  • Better performances and responses..

  • Windows 12 Mobile will be released to cross-platform stuff etc..

  • And .. and ... and ...

I have the feeling Windows 12 will going to be the very next new sexy Windows 7!!
:cwat:

W12 as a final release/compliation/product of the "experiments": 8/8.1/10/11.. and CorePC.

So when Steam stops to support Windows 7, you can opt-in before to the Windows 12 Beta program for free to bridge time until W12 officially releases..

And/or try out Linux as Debian[www.debian.org], MINT Debian[www.linuxmint.com] and/or even SteamOS which is also built upon Debian. Previous SteamOS was built upon Arch Linux[wiki.archlinux.org].

Debian core is highly stable and reliable with a high performance and will never "vanish"..
https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/0/3821910251180480028/#c3821910251180777590 ...

And to be honest and even personally, Windows 7 "had been" the best OS of all time yet, but these 1% are a minority, as sad as it is.. I have been a Microsoft Windows user since 1991.

"Windows 7 Starter" 64-bit was epic!! A barebone leight-weighted cut-down edition. I miss these official leightweighted editions since then..

Windows 7, 8, 8.1 are Dead, Old, Outdated, unsupported operating systems. Even Microsoft doesn't want anymore to do with them. :steamfacepalm:

I am not fear from Win10. I have it on my laptop and I simply hate to use it. On my gamer PC I prefer to use Win 8.1 because it supports more the older games. I use an independent firewall and viruskiller program and the Opera netbrowser which is far secure than any implemented windows browser. So I don't care if the Microsoft not give any patch anymore.
But my main issue with this process is: I bought my windows 8.1 with other programs and I like those. Win8.1 needs less space and computer capacity to run. And I don't like if somebody want to pull out any money from my wallet against my will. If somebody force me to change my Windows just pay for that, it would be correct. That's it.

"Privacy issues" in Windows 10, 11 and upcoming 12 are a joke compared to Steam itself. Even "NSA conspiracies" are a joke compared to Steam..

Steam logs, stores and backups just "EVERYTHING" you do on it. ANY chat, ANY discussion, even ANY DELETED content is still saved, since 2009!! EVERYTHING!!

https://help.steampowered.com/en/accountdata

Steam Moderators and Admins even have MORE access and tools to your content than you do yourself..

In Windows 10 and 11 you are even able to disable this "data collection" except "minimum diagnostics" just like it works on Linux to gather updates etc, while on Steam you cant at all!!

You are fit in disabling data collection on your Smartphone? Well, become fit to disable this on Windows 10 and 11. You can even disable most during a fresh and clean install, afterwards you need to disable your Ads-ID on your freshly installed Windows OS.. that's all.

You guys fear W10 and W11?! You should fear Steam a trillion times more then!!

You may ask Steam Support to delete this whole stored content, but they will answer it wont be possible and so only a complete Steam Account deletion works. Though pictures, and workshop content and such can be PERMANENTLY deleted by Steam Support of course.

All you "consumer" guys and especially pensioner have not a slightest idea what is going on .. it is a "skill issue", which is exploited by everybody.

What the point to have Windows XP or Windows 7 Steam system recommandation games if we can not play on these plateforms ? Steam makes a decision or else there is no fair vision.

:retrotorch: there will be consequences, like force you to install an antivirus to play a game, an internet connexion to use your console, buy Nintendo Switch Online to play to your free games offered by them.

"Windows 10 and 11" No such thing, you can run Win 10 on your current PC, you cannot run Win11 on PCs without the CPU/MB requirements and AMD-FX is on the scrap list but AMD Phenom is not, because.... :steamhappy:
